If you want one of the newest GoPros on offer, then the GoPro HERO12 Black is the one to go for and it even has a standard resolution of 5.3K, HDR for videos and pictures, and an excellent horizontal lock. The Hero12 also works with the newer Max lens mod 2.0 and up to eight times slow motion at 2.7k if you want a slower video for those action shots; plus, it can go underwater down to 33 feet, so if you’re a diver, this will come in handy.

On the other hand, it’s very much worth it to spend the extra cash and go for the GoPro HERO10 Black, which has newer specs and can actually film 5.6k at 60FPS quite reliably. It also has a 2.7k 240 fps slow motion mode, great stabilization, and a surprisingly responsive screen, even in wet conditions. On the other hand, performance does degrade quite a bit in low light, and battery life isn’t great.

GoPro HERO13 Black — $330 $400 18%

The latest entry into the GoPro franchise is the Hero13 Black, and it brings with it a couple of good improvements, although it’s more of an incremental upgrade than anything else. It can shoot at 5.3K resolution at 60fps, which certainly is impressive, as well as an upgrade to it’s video stabilization. That said, probably the biggest upgrade is the new lens system, which not only opens you up to a whole new world of lenses, but it’s also backward-compatible with older HB lenses, plus it has an auto-detect mode with the new lenses that is a pretty solid quality of life upgrade.

The best camera phones in 2025: our top 9 photography picks
The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and Xiaomi 15 Ultra.

Modern smartphones have almost entirely eliminated the market for point-and-shoot cameras, and many of today's flagships can even rival the best DSLRs for all but the most demanding professional photography projects. It's not just the old adage that the best camera is the one you always have with you; most of the best smartphones now count their camera systems among their most important selling points.

Much of the magic in today's smartphone cameras goes beyond the lenses. Powerful chips with advanced AI-powered image signal processing and computational photography in software allows even the most run-of-the-mill camera sensors to produce great results. That's something that most standalone cameras can't compete with, so it's small wonder that smartphones now dominate the photographic landscape.
