Marvel’s Avengers’ long-delayed Kate Bishop update coming in December

Marvel’s Avengers is finally getting its first major post-launch content drop on December 8. The Operation Taking Aim update adds Kate Bishop (aka Hawkeye), the game’s first new character since its launch.

The update was originally scheduled to launch in October, but it was delayed as developer Crystal Dynamics announced it would refocus its attention on fixing the game’s technical issues first.

A 9-minute deep-dive video outlines what’s included in the new update. Operation Taking Aim features a time-travel story that revolves around the new character. Square Enix says that “Operation” updates are akin to comic book arcs, telling an interconnected story throughout the game’s life span.

Kate is searching for her former mentor, Hawkeye, but along the way she discovers a conspiracy involving Nick Fury, time travel, and a frightening new enemy.

The video showcases Kate Bishop’s new abilities, which revolve around her bow. She’s able to shoot different types of arrows, including ones that explode on impact. Many of her abilities include teleportation options that allow her to blink forward or dodge enemy attacks. Players can use warp arrows that shoot wormholes capable of transporting teammates. Kate Bishop comes with her own set of cosmetics, some of which can be purchased via microtransactions.

Square Enix says that the next operation update will be available in early 2021. The Future Imperfect update will add the original Hawkeye, Clint Barton, to the game and pick up where Kate Bishop’s story leaves off. The studio reaffirmed that next-gen versions of the game will also land in early 2021 and will be a free update for current players.

The update is good news for the live service game, which has struggled to retain players since its September 4 launch as Square Enix changed its content rollout plans. The game recently received an update that fixed more than 1,000 issues.

If you beat Marvel's Spider-Man 2 over the holidays, there's another fantastic Marvel video game you should pick up for free on the Epic Game Store. As the final game given away for free as part of a holiday event, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is available free of charge on the Epic Games Store between today and January 11.

Eidos Montreal and Square Enix released Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy in October 2021. While it might seem like the game is riding the coattails of the successful movie series based on these characters, it tells a deeply personal and captivating story about found family and fatherhood. Although you'll recognize the struggles of characters like Gamora and Drax if you've watched James Gunn's films, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy reinterprets all these characters in creative ways, telling an intimate and interactive story in a way only a video game can. On top of that, it's also an enjoyable action game where players control Star-Lord but can call on the other Guardians for help.

The grand finale of Summer Game Fest 2023 went out on a high note with brand-new footage of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which is now slated for an early 2024 release date. The game is so big that it'll release on two discs.

Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth is the second of three planned games in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, starting with 2020's Final Fantasy 7 Remake. That game only covered the initial Midgar section of the game, though it expanded upon and added new content and features to flesh it out. With the conclusion of that title, as well as the Episode: Intermission DLC, we've only had a small glimpse as to how Rebirth will handle the game once going to the open world.

When it comes to magic, Hogwarts Legacy could learn a spell from Forspoken

Hogwarts Legacy and Forspoken are the two most discussed games of 2023 -- for entirely different reasons. Despite a slew of controversy surrounding it, Hogwarts Legacy saw a successful launch built on positive initial reviews, strong interest from streamers, and record-breaking sales for Warner Bros. The Harry Potter game has earned a significant wave of detractors too, but that hasn’t stopped it from becoming a phenomenon among a sizable swath of mainstream players.

Forspoken’s launch, on the other hand, didn’t go quite as well. Hampered by questionable marketing, Square Enix’s open-world game was the subject of ridicule before it even came out. It quickly became a social media laughing stock, as several “cringe-worthy” dialogue sequences went viral on Twitter. Middling reviews and underwhelming sales seemed to seal its fate as a big budget disappointment, while developer Luminous Productions has since been absorbed into Square Enix.
