Few movie stars have been hitting the promotional circuit more wholeheartedly than Paul Mescal, who is currently selling Gladiator II. During an interstitial on the November 16 episode of Saturday Night Live, we learned that his promotional tour will include SNL show host. Shaboozey will be the show’s musical guest. Mescal will host the December 7 show, which will be the show’s first episode following a three-week hiatus for Thanksgiving.

The episode is set to air two weeks after Gladiator II hits theaters. Mescal stars in the movie as Hanno, a former heir to the Roman empire who is forced to return to his home nation as a gladiator. This will be his first time serving as the sketch comedy show’s host.

Since starring in Normal People in 2020, Mescal has rapidly emerged as one of several young movie stars who may represent the future of Hollywood. He’s already earned himself one Oscar nomination for his performance in Aftersun, but Gladiator II represents his most mainstream movie role to date.

Saturday Night Live, meanwhile, is in the midst of celebrating its 50th season, and that season has already seen Ariana Grande, Jean Smart, Nate Bargatze, Michael Keaton, John Mulaney, Bill Burr, and Charli XCX serve as hosts.

The show will fully commemorate its 50th season with an episode on February 16 that will air during prime time. Thus far in his career, Mescal has not done much straightforward comedy, and it will be interesting to see how he works within the confines of Saturday Night Live, which some talented actors handle better than others.

Paul Mescal fights in the middle of a brawl.

It's fair to say that Gladiator II was a big step up for its star, Paul Mescal. The actor leads an all-star cast, and during a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, he explained just how intimidating he found that experience to be. In fact, he was so intimidated that he chickened out of his first opportunity to meet the two-time Oscar winner.

"The first day that I was actually working with Denzel, he was up in the box, and I was rolling around fighting some monkeys or something," Mescal explained. "At the end of the day, I was like, 'I must go up and introduce myself to Denzel.'"

Paul Mescal reveals that he won his Gladiator II role after a single Zoom call with Ridley Scott
Paul Mescal wields a sword and stares.

Paul Mescal is receiving widespread acclaim for his performance in Gladiator II, but the question of whether he was the right person to anchor a long-awaited sequel was apparently not on director Ridley Scott's mind. During a recent interview on The Graham Norton Show, Mescal revealed that he was cast in the blockbuster following a single Zoom call.
“Ridley does not waste time," Mescal explained per Deadline. “I thought there would be camera tests and auditions, but we Zoomed for half an hour, spoke for 10 [minutes] about the part and then 20 minutes about Gaelic football, his dog and his wife.”

“I thought there would be more, but he called a few weeks later to offer me the part," the Normal People actor continued. “I think he just goes by instinct, on set and off, and I’m very glad that’s the way it went.”
Following his role as one of the leads of Normal People, Mescal has experienced a rapid ascent to the height of movie stardom. He received an Oscar nomination for his performance in the widely acclaimed Aftersun and has also starred in several other acclaimed independent features.
Mescal co-stars in the Gladiator sequel with Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and Connie Nielsen. He plays Lucius, the son of Russell Crowe's character from the original film. The first wave of reactions to Gladiator II were overwhelmingly positive. With a little less than a month to go until the film's release, the only question left is whether the movie will live up to the high standard set by its predecessor.
