Optical image stabilization camera tech probably won’t come to the Galaxy Note 3

Check out our review of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 phablet.

A report suggests Samsung is hard at work on a new camera for its next generation smartphones, and that in addition to having 16-megapixels, it’ll also feature optical image stabilization technology. This has become a mainstay of high-end camera phone’s spec sheets, thanks mainly to its adoption by Nokia.

According to the article, Samsung may have wanted to add optical image stabilization to the Galaxy Note 3, and it has been connected to the device in several rumors. However, production levels haven’t been great enough to meet the target, and the Note 3 will probably be announced next month without the feature onboard. Instead, the camera’s launch has been pushed forward to early next year, which could mean only one thing, Samsung is gearing up to add a 16-megapixel camera with OIS to the Galaxy S5.

So, what is OIS? It help steady the camera’s image so you can record the sharpest pictures possible, and it has been fitted to the Lumia 920, Lumia 925, Lumia 928 and most recently, the Lumia 1020. Samsung’s arch-rival LG has also just added it to the new LG G2 smartphone, perhaps providing a reason for Samsung’s heightened interest, and need to tell the world.

The Galaxy S4 has a 13-megapixel camera, so the bumping up the megapixels and also replacing the digital image stabilization with an optical system all makes sense. Samsung already uses a 16-megapixel camera with OIS on the Galaxy S4 Zoom, but it’s all encased inside a hybrid compact camera/smartphone body, and it’s not expected to be a big, mainstream seller. Whether this new module is a tweaked version of the S4 Zoom’s camera isn’t stated.

If it is headed for the Galaxy S5, we’re unlikely to find out much until next year, as the Galaxy S4 has only recently hit stores. The phone was announced at a lavish event in New York on March 14, so look out for something around the same date in 2014.

Ordering a Galaxy S24? Don’t forget you need a power adapter
Several devices plugged into the Belkin BoostCharge 3-port USB-C wall charger on a bedside table.

Samsung recently started taking pre-orders for its brand new Galaxy S24 phone, and there are some things we already like about it. However, the Galaxy S24 doesn’t come with a charger, so you’ll need to get yourself a power adapter if you’ve put in an order. There are several options out there for new Galaxy S24 owners, and our top pick is the Belkin BoostCharge 3-Port USB-C Wall Charger. You can read onward for more on why we like it. Another consideration is the OEM charger that you can purchase directly from Samsung, and you can read onward for more information on it as well.
Belkin BoostCharge 3-Port USB-C Wall Charger — $45

The Belkin BoostCharge 3-Port USB-C Wall Charger is our top pick for Samsung Galaxy S24 owners in search of a way to charge the device. While the Galaxy S24 is likely to land among the best phones at some point, it falls short when it comes to providing this particular accessory. You’re going to have to spend a few bucks to get a charger when you purchase the Galaxy S24, and the Belkin costs slightly less than Samsung’s native charger. It offers quite a bit more, however, as it has three USB-C ports that allow you to charge multiple devices at a time. The Belkin BoostCharge 3-Port USB-C Wall Charger provides 67-watts of power for use with USB-C smartphones, tablets, and even laptops, making it super versatile and something to go along with the other accessories you need for your Samsung Galaxy S24.

When did camera zooms get so complicated? These days, we don’t just have a single number like 3x to deal with, but many other zoom levels,. we also need to understand optical zoom, hybrid zoom, periscope zoom, Space Zoom, and a whole lot more. Samsung has confused the issue again with the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which has a 5x optical zoom and a 10x hybrid zoom, meaning it’s different from the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

There’s something Samsung didn’t tell you about the Galaxy S24

“Look, dude, I don’t know how they are going to manage the costs of licensing from AI companies and cloud partnerships, among other associated factors. Nothing comes free.” That’s what a machine learning engineer told me a few days ago when I explained to him how Qualcomm and MediaTek are bringing some neat generative AI tricks to phones.

Well, Samsung has confirmed those fears and quietly dropped the bombshell that at least some of its snazzy AI tricks for the Galaxy S24 series phones will eventually ask you to cough up some cash. That’s going to happen next year, but we don’t know how much you'll have to pay and in what way — at least not right now.
