Fujifilm’s new rugged compact gets larger LCD, improved lock

As part of its yearly refresh, Fujifilm’s FinePix XP-series rugged camera gets a minor update. Besides very minimal cosmetic changes (if any), the new XP90 has a larger, higher resolution display and an improved lock to secure the compartment for the SD card slot and connectors.

Otherwise, the XP90 is similar to the XP80. It uses a 16.4-megapixel, 1/2.3-inch back-illuminated CMOS sensor and a 5x optical zoom lens with a 28mm wide-angle setting (28-140mm) with optical image stabilization. Rugged attributes also remain the same: waterproof (down to 50 feet), shock-proof (from 5.8 feet), freeze-proof (down to 14-degrees Fahrenheit), and dust-proof. Wi-Fi is standard, for image transfers and remote control from a phone or tablet. Movies are recorded at Full HD 1080 at 60p or 30p.

Other features include an Action Camera mode; interval timer, time-lapse, slow-motion, and modes; 11 creative filters; and a Motion Panorama 360 mode. Color options have changed slightly. Purple is gone, but graphite with orange joins blue, yellow, and graphite with green.

The camera will be available in February, and sell for $230.

Interestingly, the XP90 is also the only new model with the FinePix name, as Fujifilm focuses more on the advanced X-series and Instax instant film lineups, although Fujifilm tells us that FinePix isn’t going away yet. Still, it shows where the growth for Fujifilm lies; according to the company, the rugged compact is still a significant seller.
