Ferrari 458 Speciale Spider headed for Pebble Beach

The Concours d’Dlegance roundup continues.

BMW, Aston Martin, and McLaren have all announced special vehicles for Pebble Beach appearances, and 4 Wheels News is now reporting that the Ferrari’s long-awaited 458 Speciale Spider will be displayed at the event.

The Speciale will only be available at a private event for ‘special’ clients, however, so if you’re wondering how to get in, chances are you’re not on the guest list.

Still, the droptop Spider should have enough character to spill over the velvet ropes for some photos, and we expect it to be the fastest open-top sports car in Ferrari’s range. Currently, that title is held by the ‘standard’ 458 Spider, which uses a 558 horsepower, 4.5-liter V8 to hit 60 mph in under 3.4 seconds.

The Speciale coupe, as the name implies, is lighter and more powerful than its closed roof brother. The V8 has been coaxed to 597 hp in the Speciale, 39 over stock, and that’s good for an improved 0 to 60 mph sprint in 3.0 seconds. We expect the Speciale Spider to be equally quick, and for good reason.

Ferrari is meticulous in making sure its convertibles are just as fast as its coupes. The 458 Spider is just as quick to 60 as the hard top, and its predecessor, the F430, was just as impressive regardless of its roof design.

When it’s officially released, the new Spider will likely be held to a small production number. The Ferrari 430 Scuderia Spider 16M, which held the title of Ferrari’s fastest open-top sports car at one point, was offered in a limited edition of just 499 units.

The 458 Speciale Spider’s reign over the open-air podium will likely be a short one though; a LaFerrari Spider is reportedly under development.

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Dlegance will be held from August 16th-17th.

The survey of 23,000 EV drivers worldwide found that only 1% would return to a petrol or diesel car, while 4% would opt for a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) if they had to replace their car.

The transition team of President-elect Donald Trump is planning to end existing car-crash reporting requirements to safety regulators, according to a Reuters report.

The report cites a document obtained by Reuters that lays out the transition team’s 100-day strategy for automotive policy. In the document, the team says the crash-reporting requirement leads to “excessive” data collection, Reuters says.
