Lexus storming toward 2016 with GS F and RC F four-door

The departure of the Lexus IS F and LFA left a V10–sized hole in the sports car industry, but the Japanese automaker has a plan to fix that.

World Car Fans is reporting that Lexus will build not one, but two new models over the next two years: a range-topping GS F luxury sedan and a four-door version of the RC F coupe.

The GS F would take over the GS range from the GS 450h, a powerfully smooth sedan that features a 3.5-liter, 338-horsepower V6. The GS F takes a step toward BMW M5 territory, borrowing the 467-hp 5.0-liter V8 from the RC F.

According to our source’s rendering, the hot GS could wear a new front splitter and rear spoiler, as well as a racer boy two-tone color scheme. From the rear, it looks to employ the RC’s trick quad-tailpipe exhaust setup. It should debut in the fourth quarter of 2015.

A saloon version of the RC F is reportedly in the cards as well, adding some practicality and versatility to what is now Lexus’ sportiest vehicle (can you tell we still miss the LFA?).

Expect the four-door RCF to arrive in 2016. If we play our cards right, a convertible version may follow that.

Another nice nugget from Autocar’s dispatch is the possibility of a third, brand-new model, which may be released at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show.

The vehicle’s identity is still under wraps, but there are rumors that it will be a production version of the LF-LC concept that wowed at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. Keep an eye out for it in November.

There's a lot of talk about the idea that the growth in electric car sales has kind of slowed a little. It's not all that surprising -- EVs are still expensive, early adopters all have one by now, and they're still new enough to where there aren't too many ultra-affordable used EVs available. That's especially true of plug-in hybrid vehicles, which can be charged like an EV and driven in all-electric mode for short distances, and have a gas engine as a backup for longer distances or to be used in combination with electric mode for more efficient driving.

Nearly all current owners of electric vehicles (EVs) are either satisfied or very satisfied with the experience, and 92% of them plan to buy another EV, according to a survey by the Global EV Drivers Alliance.

The survey of 23,000 EV drivers worldwide found that only 1% would return to a petrol or diesel car, while 4% would opt for a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) if they had to replace their car.

The transition team of President-elect Donald Trump is planning to end existing car-crash reporting requirements to safety regulators, according to a Reuters report.

The report cites a document obtained by Reuters that lays out the transition team’s 100-day strategy for automotive policy. In the document, the team says the crash-reporting requirement leads to “excessive” data collection, Reuters says.
