Geneva 2013: Spyker sets its sights on brighter days with B6 Venator Concept

Pushing for a global resurgence, Spyker has unveiled the B6 Venator Concept at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

The hand-crafted 2-door sports car is being herald as a sign of the revival of the once troubled brand and a unique alternative to the high-end luxury market.

The face of the Venator features Spyker’s trademark radiator grille which references models of the previous century.  The 1903 Spyker logo is reminiscent of the days when Spyker built racers such as the Spyker 60HP.

Design cues include bespoke materials and aviation-inspired elements, which have always been a core part of the Spyker DNA.  Even the car’s Latin name, “Venator,” which means “Hunter,” is a nod back to Spyker’s Hunter fighter aircraft of the early 20th century.

The all-carbon fiber Venator also features 3D LED rear lights akin to the iris-type propelling nozzle of a jet engine from a modern fighter aircraft and 19-inch Turbofan wheels.

Powering the car is a mid-engine V6 with over 375 horsepower.

Spyker InteriorInside, the Venator is highlighted by a glass roof, a special high grade of leather produced by the Royal Hulshof Dutch Tanneries in Lichtenvoordev and a dashboard that lights up as part of the “pre-flight check.”  

Production is set to begin in early 2014 for Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific and India, followed by the US in autumn 2014. 

Pricing will be $125,000 to $150,000 in hopes of luring in more luxury buyers than some of the company’s pricier cars in years past.  And with all the details being released on the Venator, don’t expect the actual production model to deviate too far from the vehicle being shown in Geneva.

Spyker needs a hit and the company has little time to toy with reworking concepts.

Either way, convincing consumers to buy into the idea won’t come easy considering the financial challenges the company has faced over the years.

Nearly all current owners of electric vehicles (EVs) are either satisfied or very satisfied with the experience, and 92% of them plan to buy another EV, according to a survey by the Global EV Drivers Alliance.

The survey of 23,000 EV drivers worldwide found that only 1% would return to a petrol or diesel car, while 4% would opt for a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) if they had to replace their car.

The transition team of President-elect Donald Trump is planning to end existing car-crash reporting requirements to safety regulators, according to a Reuters report.

The report cites a document obtained by Reuters that lays out the transition team’s 100-day strategy for automotive policy. In the document, the team says the crash-reporting requirement leads to “excessive” data collection, Reuters says.
