Dell lets Skylake upgrade details slip for the XPS 13

Intel’s Skylake processors have proven to be a big hit with consumers and manufacturers, and as such, have been finding their way into a large number of systems that were due an update anyway. In this case, though, it’s a recent machine, the Dell XPS 13, that’s seeing the newest Intel chip, and it was already using Intel’s 5th-generation Broadwell chips.

Rumors of the update spread after the specs started to pop up on European retailer sites, but now pages detailing the device (which have since been removed) have shown up on the official Dell site, according to Liliputing. There aren’t too many surprises here, but it’s still nice to know for sure that the device is on its way.

For starters, the new XPS 13 offers the same screen options, with either a standard 1,080p display, or a 3,200 x 1,800 display with multitouch. The maximum RAM option has doubled since the 5th-Generation version, up to 16GB for Skylake. The storage size has doubled too, allowing you to purchase a model with one terabyte of solid state storage instead of a mere 512 gigabytes.

There are other small changes, too. The battery is slightly larger, and the connectivity options have expanded to include USB 3.0 and a Thunderbolt 3/USB Type-C plug as well. Of course, all of those specs are still subject to change, and it seems Dell isn’t quite ready to actually show off the device to the world.

That also means no word yet on the price or release date, but based on the info seen on the site and the timeline for other devices, we can’t be too far off from our first official look.

The XPS 16 is fighting an uphill battle against the MacBook Pro
Dell XPS 16 sitting on desktop with flowers.

It took a few years, but Dell finally updated the design of its two largest XPS laptops. The XPS 15 gave way to the XPS 14, while the XPS 17 was replaced by the XPS 16. The latter gained the ultramodern look of the XPS 13 Plus, complete with a glass palm rest, a hidden haptic touchpad, and a row of LED function keys.

It's a significant update but places the XPS 16 in direct competition with the Apple MacBook Pro 16. That's an excellent matchup with proven performance and battery life and an elegant design that's solid, if a lot more conservative.

Dell upended its XPS laptop lineup, downsizing the XPS 17 to a new 16-inch model and the XPS 15 to a new 14-inch machine. At the same time, it pulled design cues from the XPS 13 Plus (now called the XPS 13) to create ultramodern and sometimes controversial new machines.

Here’s why people are upset about the changes to the XPS lineup this year
The XPS 13, XPS 14, and XPS 16 on a table.

Dell made some huge changes to its XPS lineup in 2024, and people aren't happy about it. I won't go into every change here, but every single one of the over 70 comments on the video that I posted on YouTube this morning about the changes are negative. That's not a good sign.

So, what are people so mad about? Well, a lot of the divisive design decisions found in the XPS 13 Plus have been brought over to the new XPS 14 and XPS 16, leaving you with no "safe" options that represent a more conventional laptop design. When it comes down to it, there are three major things people are complaining about.
