Lenovo Inks $1.2 Billion Windows Deal

Software giant Microsoft and Chinese computer maker Lenovo have entered into a $1.2 billion agreement for Lenovo to pre-install Windows operating systems on its computers during the next year, including systems to be sold in China, where Lenovo is the leading computer manufacturer. Lenovo’s deal to pre-install legitimate copies of Windows on new computers is part of the two companies’ global efforts to combat software piracy.

Lenovo plans to pre-install Windows on its computers worldwide, but a considerable portion of those machines will be sold in China, where rampant software piracy has stunted development of western software enterprises like Microsoft. By ensuring new systems are sold with legitimate copies of Windows pre-installed, the companies hope to take some incentive away from pirates.

Although the overall impact of the $1.2 billion deal on Microsoft’s overall finances isn’t clear (since it would supersede existing deals between Lenovo and Microsoft: the companies describe the deal as “reaffirming” existing deals rather than establishing a new one) the amount represents about 10 percent of the annual revenue posted by Microsoft’s Windows division during its most recent fiscal year.

According to Lenovo Chairman Yang Yuanqing, speaking at a press event at Microsoft’s Redmond campus yesterday, about 70 percent of Lenovo’s Chinese customers are choosing PCs with Windows pre-installed; that number has risen from just 10 percent prior to Lenovo’s licensing agreements with Microsoft.

Microsoft has also announced recent deals with other Chinese PC makers: TCL Group has announced a $60 million Windows licensing arrangement, China’s Tsinghua Tongfang Co., (China’s third largest PC maker) said it would spend $120 million on Windows over the next three years, and last week China’s Founder Technology Group, China’s second-largest PC maker, announced a three-year, $250 million Windows licensing deal.

The Lenovo Legion 5i with RTX 4060 is 37% off for Cyber Week
The Lenovo Legion 5i laptop with the Legion logo on the screen.

Often the home of great gaming laptop deals, Lenovo has a particularly great one for anyone keen to game in style this holiday season. Today, you can buy the Lenovo Legion 5i with a 16-inch screen for just $1,121, meaning you’re saving 37% or $669 off the regular price. It's a hefty price cut, but it’s worth remembering that Lenovo’s estimated value system means that sometimes the original price is optimistically high. But the discounted price is still great either way. One of the better laptop deals around, the Lenovo Legion 5i looks great and packs plenty of punch for the price. Here’s why you’ll want it.

Why you should buy the Lenovo Legion 5i
Lenovo is one of the best gaming laptop brands around and my personal favorite of the bunch. Having owned an older Lenovo Legion laptop for a number of years, I’d happily recommend the range for anyone seeking a reliable gaming laptop. With the Lenovo Legion 5i, you get a great upgrade to my four-year-old Lenovo Legion. It has a 14th-generation Intel Core i7-14650HX CPU and it’s teamed up with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of SSD storage. The highlight here is its Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 graphics card with 8GB of dedicated VRAM. It’s the best graphics card in this price range dodging the downfall of the weaker 4050 GPU.

Now, regular readers will know that Lenovo is a little generous with its original prices. Oftentimes, the estimated value is overly optimistic so the true discount may be less. However, whatever the original price, we do know that $989 for this specification of laptop is a good deal. If you’re looking for a new workhorse of a laptop, read on while we take you through it.

Why you should buy the Lenovo ThinkPad E16
Lenovo is one of the best laptop brands, especially when it comes to designing sturdy business-focused laptops. The Lenovo ThinkPad E16 is a good example of that. It has an Intel Core Ultra 7 155U processor teamed up with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage. For work purposes, I’d prefer to see 1TB at this price, but there’s always cloud storage if you deal with a lot of large files.
