Web Ebbs Near Capacity

With increased popularity of social networking sites, video downloads and high-bandwidth applications, the Internet is in danger of inching close to its capacity, warns an Internet organization.

The Internet Innovation Alliance put out an announcement today cautioning that steps need to be taken by businesses and industry to prevent what it calls a coming "Exaflood". The strain on the Internet has been brought about by high-bandwidth applications and downloads, so much so that in 2007 the amount of information created will surpass for the first time the storage capacity available, according to a new IDC report as attributed in an IIA statement.

“Bandwidth-intensive applications like video and music are redefining the Internet,” said Larry Irving, co-chairman of the IIA and former Assistant Secretary of Commerce for the Clinton Administration in a statement. “The strain on broadband and the coming of this massive data deluge is called the exaflood. The exaflood challenge will be manageable, even exciting – if we take the necessary steps to expand our networks now.”

IIA is advocating investment in infrastructure, consumer protection, increasing competition and limiting governement control as methods of helping to alleviate the capacity issue going forward.

Google’s Gemini Live now speaks nearly four-dozen languages

Google announced Thursday that it is making Gemini Live available in more than 40 languages, allowing global users (no longer just English speakers) to access the conversational AI feature, as well as enabling the full Gemini AI to connect with additional Google apps in more languages.

Gemini Live is Google's answer to OpenAI's Advanced Voice Mode or Meta's Voice Interactions. The feature enables users to converse with the AI as if it were another person, eliminating the need for text-based prompts. Gemini Live made its debut in May during the company's I/O 2024 event and was initially released for Gemini Advanced subscribers in August before being made available to all users (on Android, at least) in September.

Nearly two years later, AMD’s RX 7000 GPUs don’t even make up 1% of Steam players

AMD's latest RX 7000 GPUs may be some of the best graphics cards you can buy, but they aren't popular among gamers, at least according to the latest Steam hardware survey. Only one of AMD's RDNA 3 graphics cards even shows up on the survey, with the RX 7900 XTX occupying just 0.37% -- down by 0.03% compared to last month.

It's worth noting that Steam doesn't list every GPU represented in the hardware survey each month, but it at least lists every GPU that represents a decent chunk of players. For context, the lowest-ranking GPU on the list is AMD's RX 5500 XT at just 0.16% of players. Other RX 7000 GPUs like the excellent RX 7900 GRE are likely represented further down, though with a share of only one-tenth of 1% or less.
