It’s official: The next Assassin’s Creed will be set during the French Revolution

Just the other day, a series of leaked images seemed to confirm a long-standing rumor that set the next Assassin’s Creed game in Paris (at least partially) during the French Revolution. That is no longer just a rumor; Ubisoft has confirmed that the next game in the AC series, titled Assassin’s Creed: Unity, will take us back to 18th century France later this year, on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

The confirmation comes via the trailer below, which offers no sense of characters, gameplay revisions, or how the current day setting that frames the games factors in. The earlier leak also claimed that there will actually be two AC games this year, released for different console generations. We know that Unity will be on the newer hardware and PC, while a rumored separate game, known by the reported codename “Assassin’s Creed: Comet,” could be released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 (and presumably PC). Oddly, no word on a Wii U port.

The French Revolution was a bloody and tumultuous period in French history, dominated in our imagination by the ever-looming presence of the guillotine. During the one-year period known as the “Reign of Terror” that took place from 1793-1794, as many as 40,000 people lost their lives in France, many of them under the guillotine’s blade. It was a brutal and horrific era, and it’s a perfect fit for the philosophical themes the Assassin’s Creed series wraps itself in as freedom and order mixed with bloody results.

The time period also allows Ubisoft to potentially continue the story of the Kenway family, which began in Assassin’s Creed III with Connor Kenway assassinating his way through the American Revolution. That story then continued in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag that focused on Connor’s grandfather Edward Kenway, who sailed the Caribbean as a pirate. There is no confirmation that the series will continue to focus on that bloodline, but the timeframe would fit, and the Kenway family could easily still be active. If not a direct familial relationship with the new lead assassin, don’t be surprised to see cameos from characters in the Kenway lineage and possibly other assassins – as well as Templars – with familiar surnames.

So far the trailer is the only confirmation Ubisoft has offered. With the release date of Holiday 2014, expect to hear more very soon.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows: release date, trailers, gameplay, and more
The two heroes of Assassin's Creed Shadows stand side by side.

We've been asking for it ever since the series debut, and now we're finally getting an Assassin's Creed game set in feudal Japan. Previously known by the code name Assassin's Creed Red, Assassin's Creed Shadows will be the latest entry in the long-running Assassin's saga and will now be competing directly with Ghost of Yotei, as well as other heavy-hitting games in February like Monster Hunter Wilds. That said, of all the upcoming video games, an AC game set in Japan is likely going to be one of the most anticipated upcoming PS5 games and upcoming Xbox Series X games. Ubisoft let us know we would be getting the world premiere trailer first, but it turns out there was a lot more to show than just a first glimpse at the game. We've managed to gather all the footage and information shared online to deliver you the goods about Assassin's Creed Shadows.

Sorry, Nintendo fans, but you won't be able to partake in this Assassin's Creed game, but there are still plenty of upcoming Switch games to be excited for.

Ubisoft is making some big, last-minute changes. The next game in the Assassin's Creed franchise has been pushed into next year, according to a statement the company published Wednesday, due in part to the lower-than-expected performance of Star Wars Outlaws.

Assassin's Creed Shadows, which is set in feudal Japan and has two playable protagonists, has been delayed from November 15, 2024, to February 14, 2025, to give the developers more time to "polish and refine the experience."

Ubisoft responds to Assassin’s Creed Shadows online backlash
The two heroes of Assassin's Creed Shadows stand side by side.

Ubisoft is addressing backlash it's received from players about one of Assassin's Creed Shadows' main characters with a lengthy statement concerning how it handles history.

The studio released the statement on X (formerly Twitter) and on its website, saying that it's received criticism from a lot of areas, including Japanese players who leveled accusations at the developer for skewing history with Yasuke, a legendary African samurai who's one of the game's two main playable characters, the other being the Japanese shinobi Naoe. In response, Ubisoft stated that its Assassin's Creed games are primarily historical fiction made with the help of historians, other experts, and in-depth research.
