Get a close look at the Astro Bot special edition PS5 controller

Astro Bot is out today, and it’s already poised to be one of the biggest games of the holiday season. If you’re feeling Astro fever, you can grab a special edition DualSense controller inspired by the game. Is it worth shelling out for? We gave it a spin to find out. It might be if you’re a fan, but know that it doesn’t look exactly the way you may expect in person.

The Astro Bot PlayStation 5 controller is one of the more visually creative DualSenses you can buy. It doesn’t just have a decal plastered on it or a special color. It’s a bit more involved than that, with shiny blue stripes down its grips, some robotic detailing, and a big pair of eyes on the touch pad.

It’s the little touches that stand out for me here. The blue and white palette really pops here compared to the standard DualSense black and white look. The light-blue touches on its face button and D-pad look especially great under the translucent plastic.

I appreciate that there’s actually a bit of sculpting to it too. It doesn’t just feel like a color swap. The bottom of the controller has some engraved markings that make it look like a robot shell. The blue side grip pattern also breaks away from the typical DualSense design in a way that stands out on my shelf. And as an extra touch, the back features a cute little silhouette of Astro’s face.

It does look a bit different in person than it does in ads, though. The grips are much glossier than I expected, with a sparkly blue patterning that makes it look a little plasticky. I can see the smudge from my fingerprints on it, which isn’t usually the case with other DualSenses I’ve used.

The bigger catch is the eye decal on the touch pad. Images make it look like it’s a glowing set of eyes, but it’s actually just a flat decal that feels a touch cheap compared to the rest of the controller.

Even with some caveats, this is a charming special edition controller both for Astro Bot fans and PS5 collectors. It looks unique next to your average DualSense and goes the extra mile to pay tribute to what’s quickly becoming PlayStation’s best series.

I own a PlayStation 5 Pro. It still hasn’t replaced my regular old PS5

When I first got my PlayStation 5 Pro, I had a whirlwind first week with it. I spent days on end testing as many games as I could to determine how much of an upgrade it really was over my base PS5. I looked at five-minute chunks of games like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart for hours, comparing every graphics mode on both systems. At the end of my PS5 vs. PS5 Pro testing, the result was clear: The PS5 Pro was indeed the more powerful console and, frankly, the most capable gaming device I had in my entire home.

So why, just two weeks later, am I still using my regular old PS5 so much?

Between the regular PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, buying a current-gen console is not as simple as it once was. However, you do need to make the right choice if you want to play the best PS5 games or best Xbox Series games, which is the most important factor in a gaming machine. Sure, many games are now cross-platform, but not all of them. We compared the PS5 to the Xbox Series X already, but what about the S? Let's pit Sony's console against the smaller Xbox and see which one is worth it for you.
PlayStation 5 vs. Xbox Series S: specs
Right off the bat, we need to point out that the PS5 and Xbox Series S are aimed toward slightly different audiences, and their specs do differ a considerable amount. The PS5 is aimed toward a "premium" audience looking for high-end visuals and performance, while the Series S is presented as more of an affordable option to get as many players on board as possible. You'll notice the PS5 is a more powerful system in many ways than the Series S, but that doesn't necessarily mean deciding between the two is easy. When it comes to specs, both offer custom SSDs (solid-state drives), meaning games and apps will load incredibly fast. This is a huge upgrade from the current generation's HDDs (hard disk drives), which are starting to show their age as games become much larger in scope.

The main difference between the two on the surface is that the Series S lacks a disc drive, while the standard PS5 will accept 4K UHD Blu-Ray discs. This could be a major factor for some, especially those with less reliable internet connections. The standard PS5 will cost more than the Xbox Series S, and a lower price point could prove to be the most enticing factor when choosing one over the other.

The PlayStation 5 has been out for some time now, and its reception has been mostly positive. It includes lots of quality-of-life improvements over its predecessor, the PlayStation 4, such as faster load times, a solid-state drive (SSD) instead of a regular hard disk drive (HDD), and an improved controller in the form of the new DualSense. There's even the PS5 Pro, which boasts even better performance than the base version. However, a console is only as good as the games available on it and, thankfully, the PS5 has you covered on that front as well.

While the machine already has a worthy library of great PS5 games, there are even more to look forward to — most of the best upcoming video games are going to hit PS5. Some will be completely free PS5 games, some will be PS5 exclusives, and others will be completely cross-platform so you can play with friends on Xbox, PC, and Switch.
