The AtariBox console is real: Atari’s back in the hardware biz

Updated on June 19 by Kevin Parrish to reflect that the Atari Jaguar is a multi-processor platform.

Atari CEO Frederic Chesnais admitted during E3 2017 that the company is working on a new gaming console. The revelation surfaced shortly after a tease went live during the gaming convention showcasing what appeared to be a modernized 2600 console. No name was provided during the 21-second tease although the website URL is a giveaway: AtariBox.

“We’re back in the hardware business,” Chesnais said during a brief interview.

Atari could simply be following Nintendo’s lead by conjuring up a miniature, HDTV-ready remake of its classic Atari 2600 console. If we’re lucky, Atari may even fancy cramming Atari 5200, Atari 7800, and Atari Jaguar games into the unit too. If Atari opts to follow the NES Classic Edition path, it may create additional stand-alone consoles if a mini 2600 unit sells.

But Chesnais said the AtariBox will be based on technology found in a PC. Microsoft and Sony took the same route for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, partially because developers use PCs to create their games. The end result is a game that works as intended across the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, but with slight tweaks and exclusive features for each platform.

Atari’s last hardware entry in the home console market was the Jaguar in 1993. It was marketed as the first 64-bit console that could outperform the Sega Genesis (16-bit), the Super Nintendo (16-bit), and the disc-based 3DO (32-bit). But it’s multi-processor design (including Tom and Jerry) made game development for the platform difficult. The console did not catch on either, possibly due to a lackluster game lineup at launch, a lack of good third-party support, and a bundled game that felt more like a boring tech demo.

To make matters worse, the industry began moving games onto optical discs (yes, even Nintendo). Atari tried to keep the Jaguar alive by copying Sega’s CD add-on for the Genesis, and introduce its own Jaguar CD add-on that plugged into the Jaguar’s cartridge port. But by then, Sony introduced the original PlayStation console and Sega had the Sega Saturn. After that, Atari bailed out of the hardware business after publishing 67 games for Jaguar.

Atari’s roller-coaster presence in the gaming market almost came to a close in 2013 when it filed for bankruptcy protection. But the company was rescued by Chesnais, who purchased a 25.23 percent stake. He vowed to bring greatness back to the Atari name.

Years later, Atari generates revenue through Android and iOS games and by licensing its brand. That said, creating an entirely new gaming console based on PC components seemingly came out of nowhere. The company is reportedly still working on the console’s design and plans to share additional information at a later date.

For the record, a console based on PC “technology” doesn’t necessarily mean Atari is going after the Xbox One X and PlayStation 4. For all we know, the AtariBox could run a highly optimized emulator supporting Atari’s complete game library. Hopefully, we will find out what is under the hood soon.

Where to find the cartographer in Emerald Stair in Avowed
Environmental shot of Galawains Tusks Slumbering Fields in Avowed.

You will probably have a good grip on all the tips and tricks needed to beat Avowed by the time you reach the second zone, Emerald Stair. However, no matter how many abilities you have or how good your gear is, finding a missing person with just a vague hint never gets any easier. We already helped Sanza find a missing cartographer in Dawntrail, but he has lost another in Emerald Stair and needs us to track them down. Like last time, the Avowed won't tell you where to go so we explored the entire region to show you exactly where to track them down.
Where to find the cartographer in Emerald Stair

The first cartographer quest at least gave you the general direction to find them, but this time we are only given the name of the area within Emerald Stair. The area in question is called Naku Tedek and is the isolated island on the south end of the map.

Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut
Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut - Announcement Trailer | PS5, PS4

Even before Shadows was announced, Ghost of Tsushima was touted as being the Japanese AC game that Ubisoft should have made years ago. While that is a reductive way to frame it, there's no denying there are similarities, and the two will be directly compared. Whether you plan on playing Shadows or not, Ghost is a magnificent game that still boasts some of the best graphics on PS5. Exploring the vibrant island of Tsushima as you follow the wind and animals rather than waypoints gives you a deep appreciation for the world you're fighting for. If you missed out on the Director's Cut content, jumping back in for the Iki Island DLC is perhaps the best part of the experience.

3 Xbox Game Pass games to play this weekend (March 14-16)
Assassin's Creed Odyssey review

Game Pass serves many functions as a service. Some use it to play the best Xbox Series X games on release, others lean on it between games, and everything in between. One of our favorite ways to take advantage of the massive Game Pass catalog is in preparation for upcoming Xbox Series X games. Whether it be playing previous games in a series to get caught up, or games in a similar genre to get in the mood, Game Pass has what you're looking for. We have our eye on Assassin's Creed Shadows next week just like you, but what about this weekend? Here are the best Xbox Game Pass games to boot up over the break.
Assassin's Creed Odyssey
Assassin's Creed Odyssey: Launch Trailer | Ubisoft [NA]

All the best Assassin's Creed games are on Game Pass, but we feel Odyssey is the best of them since transitioning into RPGs. Historically, this is the earliest game in the timeline, though that doesn't matter much since there are only loose threads connecting the games at this point. What does matter is how vast and enjoyable a world this is to explore. It isn't quite as bloated as Valhalla and will get you back into the groove of parkouring, stealthing, and fighting all over again. The story here is also one of the best in the series if you have the time to go all the way with it. But even just dabbling in it so you don't get burned out before Shadows is a great way to prepare yourself.
