Bungie gives away free Powerful Engram with Destiny 2: Shadowkeep launch

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep is finally here, and with the launch of the new expansion, developer Bungie is giving away free Powerful Engrams to all players.

The Engrams of Destiny 2 are basically loot boxes that serve as rewards to players. Most Engrams do not give valuable items, but Powerful Engrams help out a lot in increasing the Power level of Guardians.

Last year, Bungie rolled out an exclusive rewards program that offered rewards and special offers and to celebrate the launch of Destiny 2‘s latest expansion, the program is offering players a free Powerful Engram.

To receive the free Powerful Engram, Destiny 2 players will have to sign up on the Bungie Rewards page, where they will link their Bungie.net account, which is a requirement for playing the game. Upon successfully linking the profile, a list of rewards will appear, including the Powerful Engram.

Upon claiming the Powerful Engram, it will be sent to the game through Kadi 55-30 in the Tower, where players can pick it up like any other kind of loot.

Destiny 2 players, however, are recommended to hold off on claiming the free Powerful Engram until they reach the soft cap of 900 Power. That is the maximum Power level that players can reach through regular gameplay; afterward, players will rely on powerful drops, such as the ones that they can get from the Powerful Engram, to boost themselves to the hard cap of 950 Power. Because the Power level of the Engram is based on that of the player’s when it is claimed, the best way to get the most out of the free item is to claim it once players reach 900 Power.

Destiny 2 changes significantly with the launch of Shadowkeep, which takes players to the moon. With the launch of the expansion, the game jumps to Steam for its PC version, with its base game rebranded as Destiny 2: New Light and going free-to-play.

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep gives old players a reason to log in again, especially with the introduction of a season pass that grants rewards as players level up, as well as a roadmap over the coming weeks that include a new raid, new exotic quests, and new activities.

Destiny 2 studio Bungie hit by layoffs, internal game delays
A runner runs in Marathon.

Amid a wave of layoffs at Destiny developer and Sony subsidiary Bungie this week, Destiny 2: The Final Shape and Marathon have both reportedly been delayed.
On Monday morning, tweets from developers revealed that Bungie, which was acquired by Sony in January 2022, was suffering layoffs. This was followed up by a report from Bloomberg that went into more detail about the layoffs and their impact on Bungie's future games. Sony and Bungie have not officially commented on the delays yet, although the Bloomberg article mentions that Bungie CEO Pete Parsons will hold a team meeting later today to discuss the layoffs further. This all follows contractor layoffs at Sony studio Naughty Dog earlier this month, which happened as that studio struggles to develop and release a The Last of Us multiplayer game.

Bloomberg suggests that these layoffs, like others at Sony this year, are tied to internal game delays. While Destiny 2: The Final Shape is publicly slated to come out in February 2024, Bungie reportedly told staff that it's now going to come out in June 2024. Meanwhile, we learned that Bungie's revival of Marathon was apparently targeting a 2024 launch -- although no release window was given officially -- but will now come out sometime in 2025. These delays make the PlayStation 5's 2024 game lineup look pretty sparse right now outside of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and it suggests that Destiny 2's next season will be one of its longest.
As of now, Sony and Bungie have not publicly commented on the layoffs or delays, but we will update this post when they do say more about it.

Counter-Strike 2 is now available on Steam for free after surprise launch
A team groups up in Counter-Strike 2.

With little more than a slight tease beforehand, Valve just launched Counter-Strike 2 on Steam.
Counter-Strike 2 - Launch Trailer
Counter-Strike is Valve's long-running competitive multiplayer shooter series. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has stayed near the top of Steam's player count charts ever since it launched in 2012. After over a decade of dominance, Valve first announced Counter-Strike 2 as a free, sequel-level upgrade to Global Offensive earlier this year. After some slight teases earlier in the month, Valve finally decided to surprise launch the game on September 27.
Counter-Strike 2 builds upon Global Offensive in Valve's newer Source 2 game engine. Outside of the obvious visual upgrades that change brings, Counter-Strike 2 adds to its predecessor with a new CS Rating system, overhauled maps, and tweaks to core mechanics like smoke grenades and the tick rate at which the first-person shooter operates. Valve also promises that the game features "upgraded Community Workshop tools," so we should get some entertaining Counter-Strike 2 mods.

Valve intends for players to smoothly transition from Global Offensive to Counter-Strike 2 as the game has simply updated to make the transition, and all items players obtained in the former work in the latter. Hopefully, this approach works out better for Valve than it did for Blizzard with Overwatch 2 last year.
Counter-Strike 2 is available now on PC via Steam. It's a free-to-play game, although players can buy a Prime Status Upgrade for $15 that grants buyers the titular moniker. Having Prime Status grants exclusive items, item drops, and weapon cases and makes the game more likely to matchmake you with other Prime Status Counter-Strike 2 players.

What is Marathon? Bungie’s mysterious Destiny 2 follow-up, explained
A runner runs in Marathon.

This week's PlayStation Showcase featured a lot of surprises, from Square Enix's Foamstars to a full Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake. The biggest shocker, though, came when Bungie's logo flashed on the screen. The developer has been solely focused on the Destiny series for the last decade, so any new announcement would be significant news. For a moment, the sci-fi trailer looked like a teaser for Destiny 3. The truth would be far more surprising when we saw the game's title: Marathon.
