Destiny’s ‘The Dawning’ holiday event is live now in ‘Destiny 2’

Destiny 2‘s holiday event, “The Dawning,” arrives on Tuesday, December 19, and it opens up all kinds of winter wonders, including snowball fights in social areas, snowball attacks in Strikes, and a number of new items and cosmetics to acquire for the next few weeks.

As in the original Destiny, The Dawning adds a coating of snow, ice, and decorations to social areas in Destiny 2, along with its various modes and item introductions. Although the snowball fights give the game a somewhat playful feel, that’s not to say that this event doesn’t introduce some more serious gameplay alternatives, too.

In the Tower and the Farm, you can dig up a snowball from the various piles of snow and tag your friends, but in Strikes, you can hit an enemy with a snowball to stun them and do surprising damage considering the consistency of your projectile. “Mayhem,” a seasonal Crucible mode, is back, as well, giving Guardians the option to fight it out with faster ability recharges for some frantic, snowy action.

It wouldn’t be the holidays without presents, of course. Take part in Mayhem Crucible matches or the augmented Strikes and you’ll be able to earn new loot. Completing certain milestones each week will reward you with a Dawning engram. There are also new consumables for everyone who plays the game during this time.

If you want a specific holiday item, you can buy one straight from Tess Everis (with real money). Her inventory will rotate new holiday items in and out every week. On “one week or another,” during The Dawning, you’ll also be able to buy a new thematic exotic ship, ghost, and emote, as well as a new set of seasonal armor.

Celebrating the idea of giving during this holiday season, The Dawning also lets you craft a special present for your favorite vendor. Grab a “Dawning Gift Schematic” in the Bazaar and then craft it using items from various locations, before giving it to a vendor or agent. You’ll then receive a gift in return, though Bungie is staying mum on what exactly that will be.

The Dawning runs through January 9. Destiny 2 is available now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Its Curse of Osiris expansion recently launched on all platforms.

Bungie is making some drastic changes as it integrates more deeply into Sony and deals with the "rising costs of development and industry shifts," according to a Wednesday announcement.

The company announced that it's laying off 220 people -- roughly 17% of its workforce -- from every level of the company in what CEO Pete Parsons called a "difficult and painful day."

The First Descendant dev addresses those Destiny 2 similarities
A man with a gun fights a robot in The First Descendant.

Nexon has released a statement concerning reports that its new looter shooter The First Descendant copied art from Destiny 2.

The initial claims were published by Paul Tassi at Forbes, who noted how some of the icon art and weapons look similar between the two games. Some just look like references while others look like straight-up copies. You can see some examples in his post on X (formerly Twitter) below.

You need to check out this PS2 hidden gem that’s now on PS Plus
Ghosts attack a man in Ghosthunter.

At long last, Sony has started adding more PlayStation 2 games to its classic catalog on PlayStation Plus. The first batch included Sly Cooper and Tomb Raider: Legend as the big names, and while the prospect of diving back into Sly was incredibly tantalizing, it was a title on the list I had never heard of that roused my curiosity.

Alongside Sly, I hit download on the curious game called Ghosthunter and booted it up to see if it was just padding out the collection or if it was a major blind spot in my PS2 knowledge. The third-person shooter was created by SCE Studio Cambridge, which briefly became a sister studio to Guerrilla Games before shutting down in 2017. As it turns out, it's a piece of PlayStation history worth exploring. While it certainly has its issues, Ghosthunter isn't afraid to be experimental and weird. It feels like a true cult classic that never found its supporters in its day and prime to gain that status all these years later.
I ain't afraid of no ghost
The first thing you'll notice about Ghosthunter is how well it holds up graphically. Coming out in 2004 in North America, this was the tail-end of the PS2's lifecycle and it shows in terms of how well the lighting, character models, and animations of the era have aged. The very first cutscene is about the most early-2000s scene you could imagine, complete with a hooded figure pulling out two sci-fi guns and shooting giant skeleton soldiers in slow-motion backed by thumping club music. It's very much Matrix-inspired and, while corny, put me in the perfect mindset for the experience ahead of me.
