Epic Games and Xbox raise $36 million for Ukraine in one day

Epic Games announced March 20 that it would be “committing all its Fortnite proceeds” to numerous humanitarian aid organizations operating in Ukraine until April 3. Just 10 minutes later, Xbox announced it would do the same with all of its “net proceeds for Fortnite.” Just a day later, it’s clear what can happen when two gaming titans partner up for a worthy cause, with Epic Games announcing that the two companies have already raised $36 million.

In a tweet posted to the Fortnite account this morning, Epic Games shared that grand total, along with the organizations that would receive a slice of those funds. UNICEF, the United Nations’ World Food Programme, the UN Refugee Agency, and Direct Relief will all have extra cash to help Ukrainian citizens thanks to Epic Games and Microsoft.

Aside from being an admirable thing to do, this partnership between Xbox and Epic Games shows just how much money Fortnite rakes in, especially when new content for the game drops. March 20 also saw the release of the game’s Chapter 3, Season 2 battle pass, which added two familiar Marvel characters: Dr. Strange and Prowler. Of course, it’s not clear how much of that $36 million came from each company, however, an FAQ posted on Fortnite’s news page explained that Epic Games’ donations are “equal to the gross purchase price of all Fortnite in-game purchases or retail purchase redemptions … excluding taxes, third-party platform fees, refunds, returns, or reversals.” Xbox’s commitment of all of its “net proceeds for Fortnite” includes “the gross proceeds net of returns & chargebacks, billing costs, bandwidth cost, operations cost, and taxes.”

The ongoing donation drive from Epic Games and Xbox is the biggest we’ve seen from the video game industry yet. Numerous members of the game industry have also either taken action against Russia or sent support to Ukraine. Notably, Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo have halted all sales of their products in Russia.

Fortnite OG isn't exactly a new mode -- it's come and gone several times before. What makes today's rollout special is that Fortnite OG is here to stay, and it's news that has delighted a lot of fans. Players have flocked back to Fortnite to play the nostalgia-riddled modes they remember.

In fact, within a mere 20 minutes of release, Fortnite OG had more than 1 million concurrent players in regular Fortnite and another 270,000 in Zero Build, Polygon reports. For context, that's about 1,822 times the maximum number of players Concord saw. Fortnite has always been a force of nature, but it has recently seen a surge of gamers like never before. As of right now, as we write this story, the game has 3,383,844 players, with its all-time high peak -- yes, of any of the previous years -- coming just five days ago with a whopping 14 million concurrent players.

Microsoft outlined the last batch of games coming to Xbox Game Pass this year in a post earlier this week, and many of those titles got added to the service later in the week. One surprising trend in this final Game Pass game batch of 2024 is that three great racing games came to different subscription service tiers. Running (or I guess driving) the gamut from extremely cartoonish to overtly simulation-focused, fans of racing games have many new options to choose from this weekend on Xbox Game Pass.

In the wake of Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy's success, Activision had its studio Beenox remake Crash Team Racing for modern gaming platforms. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is undeniably the king when it comes to the best cartoon kart racers available nowadays, but Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is the closest any game has come to taking that crown. The wacky world and characters of Crash Bandicoot are a perfect fit for a Kart Racer, and this game even features some crossover content featuring Spyro the Dragon and extras from Crash Team Racing games other than the PS1 original. Its adventure mode also gives it a meatier single-player offering than most racing games, so there's a lot for Game Pass subscribers to sink their teeth into here.

Epic Games just gave Fortnite veterans the best gift: permanent OG mode

If you're a long-time Fortnite player who can't stop asking where Tilted Towers disappeared to, this update is for you. Epic is bringing back Fortnite OG -- this time, for good. The game mode will cycle through the game's first season and let players revisit their favorite locations and loot just as they remember it from way back in 2017.

And when Epic Games says it's going back, it means all the way back. The mode will initially go through the seasons of Chapter 1, including all the loot changes and feature introductions. Think of it something like a crash course in the evolution of Fortnite; you can experience it just as players did back then and learn as you go. As a veteran of those early battle royale years, I can promise it was a vastly different experience than it is now.
