‘No Man’s Sky’ subreddit closed in response to ‘hate-filled’ discussion

No Man’s Sky was meant to be one of the biggest video game releases of 2016, but instead the title has been engulfed in an ongoing backlash surrounding its perceived lack of content. One flashpoint for this unrest was the game’s subreddit, which was shut down by its lead moderator earlier this morning.

“It’s become a hate filled wastehole of no actual discussion,” wrote the moderator, who posts under the username r0ugew0lf. “It’s not what we intended it to be and I don’t like providing a platform for hate.”

The No Man’s Sky subreddit served as a popular discussion forum for eager fans ahead of the game’s release, and for disillusioned players in the wake of its launch. More than 140,000 Reddit users are subscribed to the subreddit.

Earlier today, every single post from the subreddit’s two-year lifespan was purged by r0ugew0lf, causing a great deal of resentment from user. This action was later undone by fellow moderator Sporkicide, who is taking the reins going forward, according to a report from Eurogamer.

“At the core of things, this is a subreddit and a community centered around No Man’s Sky,” wrote Sporkicide in a post addressing the changeover. “I’m asking everyone here to participate in good faith and leave any frustration with the recent situation at the door.”

Sporkicide also noted that any further posts criticizing former moderators will be deleted. A new admin team is set to be established in the hopes of keeping things civil going forward.

For many, the furor surrounding No Man’s Sky has died down, but this kind of internet drama demonstrates that there are still very strong feelings about the game among its most hardcore supporters. At this point, there’s little that developer Hello Games can do to assuage detractors — but it will certainly be interesting to see creative lead Sean Murray’s response to the backlash when he re-emerges.

The best survival games of all time
Characters in Grounded game.

If you want to be really technical, basically every game is a survival game. After all, the point is to avoid dying, right?

Games in the survival genre take that experience to the next level by forcing you to worry about things like eating, drinking, sleeping, and the weather. Oftentimes, the enemies are less of a concern than the environment itself. Still, there's something very satisfying about managing to overcome your situation and thrive in hostile lands. Survival games, like Metroidvanias and roguelikes, are some of the most popular among big and small developers so there are a ton of options out there. If you want to know the best ones you can play right now, we've got you covered.

Hello Games released the Omega update for No Man's Sky today and is making the sci-fi game free-to-play temporarily to celebrate.

The main draw of the Omega update is that it incorporates cooperative expeditions into the main game experience rather than relegating them to a side mode. The Omega expedition was added to the game today, and tasks players with exploring and charting every inch of the planet Nafut Gamma. Completing this expedition will reward players with a limited-edition helmet and staff Multi-Tool, and players can carry over any resources gained during it. While this change is the biggest addition of the Omega update, it's far from the only notable change.

The best Mega Man games, ranked

Capcom has been in the games business almost as long as Nintendo. Despite never getting into the hardware business, it still developed its own mascot of sorts very early on with Mega Man. This little robot boy, known as Rockman in Japan, was one of the most popular and influential series on the NES, spawning a franchise that became famous across the globe. The core series would lead to cartoons, merchandise, and spinoff series, but it all began with the idea of a little blue robot fighting bosses to take their powers. While the series in general has been almost completely dormant since the end of the X series, there have been a few attempts to bring it back into prominence. To date, there are 11 mainline games all following the same formula, but varying wildly in quality. Now that there are two Mega Man Legacy Collections bundling all the games together, we've gone back to rank every game in the series from best to worst.
