Pokémon with guns: Indie game Palworld has players up in arms

A new game revealed during this weekend’s Indie Live Expo has some players scratching their heads. Palworld is a Pokémon-like game scheduled to release in 2022 that’s filled with cute monsters … and lots of guns.

PALWORLD - Official Trailer

Developed by Pocketpair, Palworld is described as a multiplayer open-world game with survival crafting elements. At first glance, it looks a bit like an average Pokémon game. The trailer features a vibrant world filled with creatures that look directly based on specific Pokémon. There’s even a sheep that looks suspiciously similar to Wooloo.

After around 35 seconds, the trailer takes a bizarre turn. It cuts to human characters shooting monsters with assault rifles and shotguns. At one point, a character uses the same adorable sheep I mentioned above as a shield to deflect bullets.

In another baffling moment, the camera cuts to a factory where weeping monsters are mass-producing assault rifles. The game’s Steam page includes an entire section on its factory automation mechanic, which is even darker: “It is essential for automation to let Pals do the manual work. Build a factory and place Pals in it. They will work forever as long as they’re fed until the end of their lifetime.”

Pocketpair has racked up tons of engagement on social media, with the trailer getting over 33 thousand likes on Twitter alone. While some seem all in on the trailer’s “WTF” nature, others are disgusted.

“I’m legitimately horrified at this game and how many people are excited for blatant-Pokémon-ripoff-creature-design gun wars and slave labor,” tweeted user Screaming Possum in response.

It’s not clear what Pocketpair’s intentions are here, but Palworld does read like an intentional social satire. The game’s Steam page lists all the normal features you’d see in a monster collecting game next to cheeky ones that describe illegal poaching and hunting mechanics. It seems to be a sharp commentary that digs into the dark undertones of games like Pokémon that are about capturing creates and making them battle.

Whatever the intent is, Palworld is set to release sometime in 2022. For a more wholesome monster collecting experience, maybe stick to New Pokémon Snap.

The Pokémon Company is investigating Palworld after plagiarism suspicions
Sheep carry guns in Palworld.

The Pokémon Company finally put out a statement addressing the similarities between the designs of some creatures from its namesake franchise and Pocketpair's viral monster-collecting survival crafting game Palworld. The company says it is investigating the matter.

Pocketpair's Palworld has been this month's surprise gaming hit, selling over 8 million copies in less than a week. While its survival crafting gameplay is quite different from the turn-based RPG stylings of Pokémon, Palworld has still garnered a reputation as "Pokémon with guns" ever since its reveal, and comparisons have only continued since its early access launch on January 19. Now, The Pokémon Company says it's investigating the game after players pointed out similarities between Palworld and Pokémon's creatures.

Where to find the Black Marketeer in Palworld
The black marketeer in Palworld.

Guns aren't the only darker subject matter Palworld takes on that may surprise those who see it as just a Pokemon clone. Beyond collecting Pals and resources like Ancient Civilization parts to craft buildings, you will also be able to procure some rather dubious items, such as people. While you can put them to work for you, there is an entire network of black market sales that you can participate in that can be very lucrative if you don't mind doing some morally grey business deals. If you're ready to participate in the dark underbelly that is Palworld, here is where you can find all the Black Marketeers to buy and sell rare items.
All Black Marketeer locations
There are five different Black Marketeers to find hidden in the wilds of Palworld. They are all well-hidden, and some you won't be able to reach until later in the game, but thankfully all seem to buy and sell the same stock at the same prices. Note that they do have a limited stock of items for sale, but will refresh if you leave and come back after some time.

No, Palworld isn’t going to be a ‘Pokémon killer’
Sheep carry guns in Palworld.

We have our first hit video game of 2024, and it's a shocker. The eccentric Palworld, an early access game available now on PC and Xbox Game Pass, is smashing Steam records as developer Pocketpair sells millions of copies. That's thanks in large part thanks to its bizarre elevator pitch, which is succinctly described as "Pokémon with guns."

That success has come with some heated debates. Palworld earned a lot of criticism in its inaugural weekend as players discovered monster designs that looked nearly identical to some of those in Pokémon. Accusations of plagiarism ballooned into suspicions over AI usage that have yet to be proven. An army of already dedicated fans have rushed to its defense with their own over-the-top claims. That army includes disgruntled Pokémon fans who see the new game as an antidote to buggy titles like Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Palworld defenders have already labeled it a "Pokémon killer" and hope that Game Freak learns from its success.
