It’s Black Friday weekend, so you might have found a good deal on a PlayStation 5, PlayStation VR2, or PS Plus Premium or Extra subscription. If you got that last one, then you’re probably looking at the vast catalog of Sony’s video game subscription service and wondering where you should start. To help with that, I want to spotlight three great games that came to the higher tiers of PS Plus earlier this month. Download any of these, and that discount you got a PS Plus subscription with will start to feel like a steal.

Dying Light 2

Techland

Techland’s Dying Light titles are some of the best zombie video games out there. They not only feature some extremely satisfying and brutal combat, but they also have fun open worlds to explore thanks to an intricate parkour system. Dying Light 2: Stay Human goes bigger, giving players more gameplay options, like a paraglider for traversal and the power to change the world and story with certain choices. While we’re nearly a month past Halloween at this point, this zombie game is still well worth your time.

The PS4 and PS5 versions of Dying Light 2 are now part of the PS Plus Extra game catalog. It’s also on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Chivalry 2

Torn Banner Studios

If you’re looking for a multiplayer game on PS Plus Extra, I’d recommend Chivalry 2. While most popular multiplayer games are modern military shooters, Chivalry 2 is set in medieval times and pits teams of players against each other with a variety of medieval weaponry. Like Dying Light 2, fights in Chivalry 2 can get pretty visceral, with limbs being dismembered and lots of chaos as players kill each other (and potentially their teammates, if they aren’t careful). The game also received its final major update earlier this year, so it feels like a complete multiplayer experience.

Chivalry 2 is available through PS Plus Extra’s game catalog on both PS4 and PS5. It’s also available for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S via Game Pass.

Synapse

One of the biggest issues with PlayStation VR2 is its lack of compelling exclusives. Synapse is one of very few games that is truly a PSVR2 exclusive, and it’s now available as part of PS Plus Premium’s small selection of VR titles. It’s a roguelike first-person shooter, and while that isn’t very revelatory for VR, its unique gameplay twist is. During combat, players can use telekinetic abilities to pick up and throw objects and enemies around their arenas. While Synapse can get repetitive, it does provide some of the best VR shooting action available on PSVR2.

Synapse is a PSVR2 exclusive that’s now part of the PS Plus Premium game catalog.

3 games leaving Xbox Game Pass you should play this weekend (December 27-29)
A cast of Blazblue Cross Tag Battle pose together.

We're approaching New Year's Eve, and several games will be leaving Xbox Game Pass on that day. If you're wondering what you should play this weekend and are a Game Pass subscriber, you should give these games a shot before they leave Microsoft's video game subscription service. Specifically, I'm highlighting two charming indie games and a bombastic crossover fighting game this week.
BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle Special Edition
『BLAZBLUE CROSS TAG BATTLE Special Edition』 on Xbox — Announce Trailer | Xbox Game Pass

BlazBlue is a long-running Japanese fighting game franchise. It hasn't managed to break out worldwide in quite the same way Guilty Gear did, but the closest it got was with BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle. This game took the hardcore fighting mechanics and stunning anime-inspired visuals of the series and used it for a 2v2 tag-team crossover game. While BlazBlue characters are still part of Cross Tag Battle's roster, it features several guest fighters from RWBY, Persona 4 Arena, Under Night In-Birth, Arcana Heart, Senran Kagura, and Akatsuki EN-Eins. It's an eclectic mix of fighters you won't find in any other game, so Cross Tag Battle is worth a shot if you're a fan of any of the franchises featured in this crossover.

3 new PS Plus games that you should play this weekend (December 20-22)
Frey in Square Enix's Forspoken.

The latest batch of new PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium game catalog additions was released this week. As a result, PS Plus subscribers have a ton of new options when it comes to what to play as we approach what is many people's holiday break. Games from this most recent batch are what I'm recommending people check out this weekend. One of the titles is technically a Christmas game, so it's fitting to play this time of year, while my other recommendations are good options if you're looking for something to play with others.
Forspoken
Forspoken - Official Launch Trailer

Square Enix's Forspoken is a high-profile action RPG console exclusive that was released on PlayStation 5 in 2023. While its quip-heavy dialogue definitely isn't for everyone, the way it incorporates the player's magical abilities into combat and traversal is truly exhilarating. Dashing through large fields, surfing on top of water, and launching bullet-like streams of rocks at enemies is immensely satisfying. Forspoken's Isekai adventure technically begins with the main character, Frey, being whisked away from New York City around Christmas. That technically makes this a Christmas game, giving you all the more reason to check it out this weekend.

3 games leaving Xbox Game Pass you should play this weekend (December 20-22)
A custom car built drives around Lego 2K Drive.

No more new games are coming to Xbox Game Pass for the rest of 2024. In fact, the service is going to lose some games at the end of the month. All of the games leaving the service on December 31 are very entertaining, and the lineup encompasses wacky racing games, hardcore strategy games about the history of humanity, and goofy fighting games where players control cute animals. These games are worth checking out this weekend as they're leaving Microsoft's gaming subscription service very soon.
Lego 2K Drive
LEGO 2K Drive | Awesome Reveal Trailer | Coming May 19

Racing games are some of the most approachable ones out there, so it makes sense that the genre would be a perfect fit for a Lego game. Visual Concepts and 2K went a step further than they had to with Lego 2K Drive, though, adding large open areas full of missions and minigames to experience. Lego 2K Drive is a light and breezy arcade-like racer that doesn't ask too much from players unless they want to spend a lot of time building vehicles piece by piece. After this game leaves the service at the end of the month, Forza Horizon 5 will be your only option when it comes to open-world racing games on Xbox Game Pass.
