One of the PS5’s best exclusives will finally launch on PC next month

uThe PC version of Returnal will finally launch on February 15, with confirmation coming from Housemarque and PlayStation Studios on the PlayStation Blog. Alongside this announcement, we got a brand new trailer and more details on the impressive graphical features and demanding specs that caught Digital Trends’ eye in December.

Returnal - Features Trailer | PC Games

Returnal will support Nvidia DLSS and NIS, as well as AMD’s FSR technology for those who what to maximize Returnal’s performance on PC, which is worthwhile for such a fast-paced action game. On the visual side of things, the PC version of Returnal will support ray-traced shadows as well as 21:9 and 32:9 Ultrawide monitors. Sony says the game features “ray-traced audio,” which isn’t a common term in gaming and seems to just be another way of describing the detailed 3D audio that comes standard with most first-party PlayStation Studios titles.

Of course, Returnal will also support keyboard and mouse controls on PC, though players can still use a wired connection to experience the game with the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Housemarque also reaffirmed the demanding PC specs needed to play Returnal on PC. While 32 GB of RAM is no longer the requirement for the Recommended Specs (both the minimum and recommended specs ask for 16 GB of RAM), if you want to play Returnal at a 4K resolution with ray tracing at 60 frames per second (fps), you’ll need an Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti GPU, Intel i9-11900K CPU, and 32 GB of RAM. This falls in line with the recent trend of extremely demanding PC games

Returnal launches for PC on February 15 and is available now for PS5.

The PS5 Pro holds the key to the PS6’s success
The hero of Shadow of the Colossus stands in a temple.

When the PlayStation 5 Pro was revealed, the big buzzword to come out of the presentation was PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). This was PlayStation's "secret sauce" intended to sell the $700 upgrade to new customers and existing PS5 owners alike. Similar to AI upscaling seen in technology like DLSS, PSSR allows games rendered at a lower resolution to be upscaled using AI to appear more detailed. For the PS5 Pro, this means removing the need to choose between a performance mode that prioritizes frame rate and a resolution mode that sacrifices frame rate for a clearer picture.

PSSR is the first time any kind of AI upscaling has been used on consoles ... and will be key in PlayStation's success for its true next-generation console.
Sidestepping the graphical arms race
With rare exceptions, new game consoles have mainly sold themselves based on providing a graphical leap above its predecessor. This was clear as day going from 8- to 16-bit systems, and perhaps at its peak going from 16-bit to 3D, but has since hit a level of diminishing returns. PS5 games are undeniably better looking than PS4 games of the same scale, but the differences are in the margins.

Quiz: Can you tell the difference between these PS5 and PS5 Pro screenshots?
A PS5 Pro that's floating in front of a gray background. It's turned to the side.

Ever since the PlayStation 5 Pro was first revealed, I've seen a common refrain from some skeptics: "I don't see a difference!"

I was in the same boat when Mark Cerny introduced the console in a YouTube video back in September. A compressed YouTube stream just isn't the best way to communicate a console that both increases resolution and frame rate. I only started to see just how different the PS5 Pro looks compared to the base model once I could see them side by side in my own home. It took me some time -- and a lot of eye straining -- to spot some of the finer details outside of its more obvious AI-upscaling benefits, but I was able to see them eventually. The PS5 Pro does improve image quality, but is the bump enough to justify a $700 purchase?

Stardew Valley

There are few cozy games as successful and beloved as Stardew Valley, so it's no wonder it has received regular updates since its 2016 release.

The 1.6 update for Stardew Valley was released back in March 2024 for PC, adding new festivals and events, NPC dialogues, farm types, more pets, and much more. Unfortunately, the update did not immediately release on consoles, leaving farmers playing on smartphones, Switch, Xbox or PlayStation waiting for all the new content.
