Returnal is getting a free co-op update this month

As part of today’s PlayStation State of Play showcase, Housemarque revealed that its latest title Returnal, is getting a substantial free update that adds a suite of new content to the challenging roguelike.

Returnal - Ascension State of Play March 2022 Trailer | PS5

Arriving on March 22, the free update is officially titled Returnal: Ascension. The first and biggest change that players should notice is that they can now run through the game’s procedural levels with friends. The addition of co-op to Returnal should be welcome for anyone playing the game, which has been regarded as one of the more challenging roguelike titles out there. Players can host or join a co-op session throughout their run, and naturally, can start a private session and invite a friend. To stop players from having an unfair advantage, Returnal‘s co-op will be limited to two people at a time.

For players who have already beaten Returnal, the game’s Ascension update will also add a new endless mode to the game called the “Tower of Sisyphus.” While it’s not clear how players will access this new bit of content, it will include a suite of new bosses, enemies, and weapons for players to use. The Tower of Sisyphus will also include some extra narrative bits, further fleshing out Selene’s own story. However, it’s worth noting that players won’t be able to play through the Tower of Sisyphus together. Like some parts of the main game’s story, the Tower will be locked to single player.

Returnal: Ascension is the game’s second main update. The first let players properly suspend their runs at any time, a feature that wasn’t in the game at launch.

Remnant 2 gets a big Steam discount alongside crossplay update
Three characters shoot at a boss in Remnant 2.

Remnant 2, one of the best multiplayer games of 2023, just received an update that added crossplay and is now available at a discounted price of $30 on Steam for a limited time.

Released in July 2023, Remnant 2 is a co-op third-person looter shooter with surprisingly great boss fights. Campaigns are made up of procedurally generated worlds and narrative moments pulled together from a wider pool, making each replay of Remnant 2 feel unique. It's very fun on your own, but most enjoyable with friends as it supports up to three players in co-op. Until now, multiplayer has been locked to individual platforms.

Hideo Kojima partners with Sony on a return to the stealth action genre
Hideo Kojima 2024 January State of Play in front of Kojima Productions banner

Kojima Productions has a new stealth action game coming after the long-awaited Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. At the latest PlayStation State of Play, Kojima revealed that his studio will work with Sony to produce a new, original IP in the form of a "next-generation action espionage" game. He now has a total of three AAA games in the works, including OD.

While Kojima didn't reveal anything specific about the game, he claimed that he was confident the title would be the "culmination" of his work. He described it as an interactive title that would also be a movie, aligning with his well-documented interest in film and production. It's unclear if this means that the project is both a game and a movie, or a game that is like a movie.

Half-Life gets a free update and Steam Deck verification for its birthday
Artwork for the original Half-Life's 25th anniversary.

November 19 marks the 25th anniversary of the original Half-Life, and to celebrate, Valve made a special announcement. No, Half-Life 3 was not announced. But Valve celebrated the anniversary with a massive update to the game on PC and a new documentary detailing its development. The best part: It's all available for free.

Half-Life's 25th-anniversary update incorporates the Half-Life: Uplink demo that Valve gave away as a CD via magazine and hardware manufacturer promotions in the 1990s and introduces many multiplayer maps. That includes four brand-new maps -- Contamination, Pool Party, Disposal, and Rocket Frenzy -- and three more maps that were previously only included in the Half-Life: Further Data CD release: Double Cross, Rust Mill, and Xen DM. It's also now possible to play as a Space Biker, Prototype Barney, Skeleton, and Too Much Coffee Man and use dozens of Further Data sprays in Half-Life: Deathmatch.
