Xbox Game Pass’ next Blizzard additions are StarCraft’s single-player campaigns

The next Blizzard games to hit Xbox Game Pass are two real-time strategy (RTS) classics. Xbox announced during its Tokyo Game Show 2024 presentation that StarCraft: Remastered and StarCraft 2: Campaign Collection will be available on PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate very soon.

The reveal was delivered by Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, who appeared on the virtual stage in a StarCraft T-shirt. Spencer delivered a series of quick announcements before capping off his appearance by stating that the two games will hit Game Pass on November 5.

This doesn’t change players’ ability to play StarCraft and StarCraft 2‘s multiplayer for free through Battle.net with a Classic account. This release is for those who want to play any single-player campaigns. StarCraft: Remastered includes visual and audio upgrades to the original game, like 4K and widescreen aspect ratio support. StarCraft 2: Campaign Collection offers a way to play over 70 missions, according to Blizzard, from Heart of the Swarm, Wings of Liberty, and every other expansion. These releases also still feature their multiplayer modes.

Normally, StarCraft 2: Campaign Collection costs $40 on Battle.net, while StarCraft: Remastered goes for $15. Unfortunately (depending on how you look at it), StarCraft: Cartooned bundles won’t be playable on Game Pass.

“Ever since StarCraft first launched in 1998 and expanded with StarCraft 2 in 2010, the series has left an indelible mark on the real-time strategy (RTS) genre, esports, and the rise of live streaming – and continues to enthrall a very active and passionate community that is always looking to welcome new members into their ranks,” Xbox noted in a blog post.

So, no, there isn’t any news of StarCraft 3. Sorry about that.

3 new Xbox Game Pass games to check out this weekend (September 20-22)

As the fall season approaches, the number of high-profile Xbox Game Pass additions is rising. That said, the service also does a great job of appealing to players who are fans of more specific, niche genres. September 2024 has been particularly kind to Xbox Game Pass subscribers who are fans of simulation or strategy games that require a deeper level of engagement and dedication. These are the kinds of games I'm recommending to you this week, especially because one of them launches right into Microsoft's video game subscription service today.
Frostpunk 2

Later today, Frostpunk 2 will get its wide release on PC and be available to Game Pass subscribers. It is a more ambitious sequel to an enthralling yet stressful city-builder in which players try to survive in a harsh, snowy apocalypse. Frostpunk 2 increases the scale of things as players try to maintain the restored civilization they built from scratch in the first game. It exacerbates the already stressful nature of real-time city-builders but in a way that works perfectly in its postapocalyptic world. Frostpunk 2 is only available on PC, and you can play it there with a PC Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate subscription.

Overwatch 2 is now on Xbox Game Pass, and it comes with perks

Blizzard Entertainment surprise dropped Overwatch 2 on Xbox Game Pass on Tuesday, despite the game being free to play and already on Xbox.

You might find this to be a strange addition, but as a Blizzard blog post specifies, this is more about encouraging players to link their Battle.net and Xbox accounts. As a reward, players that do so will receive six exclusive skins: Cardboard Reinhardt, Turtleship D.Va, Cyberdragon Hanzo, Street Runner Genji, Bee Mercy, and Cleric Lifeweaver. (The image of a Reinhardt in a cardboard suit is delightful.) Players will also get 30 Mythic Prisms that they can use in the Mythic Shop for other skins.

Xbox Game Pass in September is all about sims, strategy, and star truckers

If you like sims, strategy games, or driving various vehicles, you're in luck with Xbox Game Pass in September. Xbox announced the games coming to its subscription service in the first half of the month, and it includes a seemingly random, smaller list of releases that hones in on a couple of specific player types.

The big addition from an Xbox perspective is Age of Mythology: Retold, which is hitting the platform at launch on September 4. The real-time strategy game is published by Xbox Game Studios, so it's of course making a day-one appearance. It's developed in part by World's Edge, the makers behind the Age of Empires series, but instead of real-world armies, you'll pit mythological figures against each other.
