Tekken 7: Fated Retribution has an awesome Street Fighter crossover: Akuma

Big news on the fighting game front: Bandai Namco announced the release of Tekken 7: Fated Retribution at its King of the Iron Fist Tournament in Tokyo this weekend. This comes hot on the heels of the Tekken 7 announcement at Paris Games Week in October, and marks the twentieth anniversary of the franchise. Interesting stuff, but the big news is that the announcement also revealed a surprising new addition.

Akuma will be a playable character in the new Tekken game, as featured in the trailer. The once-hidden boss of Super Street Fighter II Turbo has come a long way. From the marketing, there’s also indication that Akuma and Heihachi Mishima are going to go head-to-head. Bandai said this “sequel to Tekken 7″ is set to be the finale of the Mishima clan’s struggle for dominance. That’s a fight worth playing, but if you stop and think about it, the issues with crossovers between the two games become apparent.

Hardcore members of the fighting game community are probably wondering how Akuma is going to fit into Tekken, considering that the series has a markedly different play style than Street Fighter. While Akuma’s — or Gouki’s — Shoryuken and Raging Demon might not be considered totally alien to other moves in the non-Capcom franchise, his fireball stands out since Tekken doesn’t really contain projectiles.

For those players clutching their controllers in anticipation for Street Fighter V in 2016, at least there’s one definite option to play Akuma, even if it means switching over to Tekken for a round or three. That’s taking into consideration that the great demon has been left off of SFV‘s character’s list, so far. And if you’re waiting for Tekken X Street Fighter to satisfy that crossover itch, keep waiting. There’s still no release date for it, even though it’s been in development for five years. Players will also have to be a little patient for Tekken 7: Fated Retribution, as there’s no release date confirmed for it yet either.

In classic Tekken fashion, Tekken 8 is full of lore, as well as additional "what if" lore content. With a brilliant new story mode and a lot of catch-up material jam-packed into the game, there's a lot to take in.

Accompanying all of the canon narratives of the title are Character Episodes — mini arcade mode runs that feature each character in their final matches of the King of Iron Fist Tournament. Upon completing four fights, you're given a gorgeous cinematic ending that showcases what would happen if your selected fighter wins.

Tekken 8's story doesn't end with the completion of story mode. There are still a few loose ends that the "The Dark Awakens" story mode doesn't cover. The big elephant in the room for fans everywhere is: What happened to Jun Kazama — if Ogre didn't kill her, what happened?

While we don't find out the exact truth in the main story mode, we can unlock Jun's Side Story to find it.

From Lara Croft to Bayonetta, these are our favorite Tekken 8 custom characters

The Tekken series isn't just known for its slick 3D fighting. Like the Soul Calibur series, Tekken has become just as celebrated for its excellent character customizer over the years. As seen with Street Fighter 6's create-a-character, if you give players access to a tool this powerful, then you can expect tons of designs ranging from jaw-droppingly impressive to just plain weird.

In Tekken 8's case, players immediately began creating their own dream guest characters using the customization mode once it launched. It's almost scary how official some of the custom creations we've seen so far are, bringing characters from entirely different games into the ring. So many have blown me away already, so I'm taking a break from the grind to share some highlights. Who knows? Maybe it'll inspire you to create something of your own.
