Xbox Countdown sale offers big savings on digital games like ‘Forza Horizon 4’

2018 Xbox Countdown Sale

If you’re getting an Xbox One for Christmas — or if you’re planning to give the console to a loved one — Microsoft is providing the perfect chance to bulk up your game library at greatly reduced prices. The Xbox Countdown sale runs through January 3, and includes savings on many of the year’s top games. If you’re an Xbox Live Gold member, you’ll get an additional 10 percent off on many of the games, as well.

Xbox One console exclusive Forza Horizon 4 is currently on sale for just $39, down from the $60 it typically goes for on the Xbox digital store. It’s one of the best racing games ever made, and recent expansions have only made it better since it launched during the fall.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has been put on sale for $45, and it’s one of the most surprising games to come out of 2018. Despite ditching the campaign mode, Black Ops 4 shines with fantastic competitive multiplayer, plenty of Zombies content, and the new Blackout battle royale mode.

The extremely underrated Shadow of the Tomb Raider is available for just $36. The conclusion to Lara Croft’s Trinity saga is an action-packed thrill ride that still manages to excel in its quieter character-focused moments. Its gorgeous environments show off the power of the Xbox One X with HDR.

Other games on sale for Xbox One include:

A number of Xbox 360 games are also available during the sale, and they are backward compatible, so those with new Xbox One consoles can still enjoy them. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is on sale for $18, while the original Gears of War is only $5. The list of games on sale is huge, so check it out in full to find what you’re looking for.

If you’re still looking to get the Xbox One, Microsoft is offering several bundles through its own store as well. The 1TB Xbox One X Forza Horizon 4 bundle is down to $400, and three other Xbox One S bundles are priced at $199. In addition to either Battlefield V or Forza Horizon 4, two of the bundles also include a free digital copy of Gears of War 4.

Some big Xbox games might finally get release dates at Gamescom
A masked figure in Avowed. The mask looks like it's made of gold, it has glowing red eyes, and there's a hood over its head.

Xbox is taking the stage at Gamescom later this month, bringing three big presentations for Avowed, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Starfield: Shattered Space. These are all games set to come out in 2024, but none have release dates or have been fully revealed to the public.

While we got the most in-depth look MachineGames' upcoming Indiana Jones title and its gameplay during the company's summer showcase, we don't have a release date or any information about the larger story, besides that it takes place chronologically between Raiders of the Lost Arc and The Last Crusade, involves Nazis, and features a mysterious artifact (so, not too different from a typical Indiana Jones story). We do know that the majority of the gameplay will be in first person and that there will be puzzles, but little else.

3 new Xbox Game Pass games to play this weekend (July 26-28)
A soldier with a shotgun pointing to shoot in Modern Warfare 3.

July continues to be an all-killer, no-filler month for Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft's subscription service is receiving comparatively fewer games throughout July than it got in previous months of the year and is facing backlash over an expensive price hike. That said, every new game coming to service this month is worthwhile, with many of them also being added to the service on the day of their release. This week, Microsoft hit another big Xbox Game Pass milestone because a Call of Duty game came to the service for the first time ever. If you're wondering what games you should play this weekend, these new additions to Xbox Game Pass are worth your attention.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III

The long-awaited arrival of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III on Xbox Game Pass is finally here. This is the most recent Call of Duty game at the time I'm writing this, and it delivers a story-driven campaign, zombie mode, and multiplayer that players can sink a ton of time into. It's inferior to some other recent Call of Duty games, but it's still a big deal that it's on Xbox Game Pass and worth some playtime, as subscribers don't have to be concerned with spending $70. Hopefully, more Call of Duty games come to the subscription service soon. The PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III as well as its Cross-Gen Bundle for Xbox One and Xbox Series X are now on Xbox Game Pass. It's not playable via Xbox Cloud Gaming yet because Ubisoft technically owns those rights, and it's still available for purchase on PS4 and PS5.

Xbox Game Pass is getting its first Call of Duty game
A soldier with a shotgun pointing to shoot in Modern Warfare 3.

Xbox isn't waiting until Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 to get a Call of Duty game on Game Pass. The company announced Tuesday that 2023's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be added to the service on Wednesday, July 24.

The announcement was heavily rumored beforehand, with reports from outlets like Insider Gaming, but it was made official on Xbox Wire. Xbox confirmed that the game will be hitting Game Pass for Console, PC Game Pass, and Game Pass Ultimate (so every old tier ahead of the upcoming price hike), and it will include most modes, including single-player and the more open-world Zombies mode. It doesn't appear to include Warzone, the series' battle royale spinoff, although that's free to play.
