3 games leaving Xbox Game Pass that you should play this weekend (August 9-11)

August looks like it will be a somewhat quieter month for Xbox Game Pass after a July filled with heavy hitters like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, The Case of the Golden Idol, Neon White, and Dungeons of Hinterberg. As such, this is a month where it’s worth looking toward what games are leaving the service rather than which ones are coming in. On August 15, a few great games will leave Xbox Game Pass after a year or more on Microsoft’s gaming subscription service. That should inform what you decide to play this weekend, as you’ll need to buy these three games outright if you want to play them after August 15.

Shadow Warrior 3: Definitive Edition

Devolver Digital

If you enjoy exhilarating first-person shooters, then you’ll want to check out Shadow Warrior 3. It’s the latest entry in a series that Flying Wild Hog and Devolver Digital created in the early 2010s, prior to the Doom series’ revitalization and the rise of indie boomer shooters. Still, it’s a throwback to those old-school shooters with a ridiculous story, over-the-top action and set pieces, and an irreverent tone. It’s very satisfying to flow between annihilating enemies with a variety of weapons and slashing through them with a powerful katana. This is a fairly short game, too, so it’s definitely possible to beat Shadow Warrior 3: Definitive Edition on PC, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X/S before it leaves Game Pass next Thursday. It’s also available on PlayStation 4 and PS5.

Gun Interactive

After Dead by Daylight became popular, many iconic horror franchises have gotten asymmetrical multiplayer games of their own. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre from Sumo Digital and Gun Interactive is one of the better attempts. It’s a 3v4 multiplayer game where four victims slowly and stealthily try to escape while three members of the family fortify the exits and potential escape routes while also collecting blood from victims and blood bags to feed their grandpa. It’s one of the most stressful and tense multiplayer games I’ve ever played and very faithful to the horror classics it is based on. The PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S versions of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre leave Xbox Game Pass on August 15, but you can also play the game on PS4 and PS5.

Airborne Kingdom

The Wandering Band

Finally, we have Airborne Kingdom, which is the prime choice for fans of city-builder games. Airborne Kingdom’s unique twist on the formula is that players are building up a flying city that travels through the air while collecting resources and interacting with the kingdoms still operating on the surface of the planet. This game provides the rewarding sense of growth all city-builders offer, but stands out because of the novel way it presents it. Although Airborne Kingdom is available on console, I recommend trying it out on PC. It feels much better to play with a keyboard and mouse than a controller. Airborne Kingdom is available to play across PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S via Xbox Game Pass. It’s also on PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.

3 new Xbox Game Pass games to play this weekend (November 22-24)
A cockpit view in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.

While November has been a quieter month for Xbox Game Pass, this week saw three games launch on Xbox to the benefit of Game Pass subscribers. One is the latest entry in Microsoft's longest-running video game series, another is the long-awaited sequel to a supernatural horror cult classic, and the last one is a popular fantasy MMO that has finally made its way to Xbox Series X/S with bonuses for Xbox Game Pass subscribers. If you have an Xbox Game Pass subscription, but aren't sure what you should be playing this weekend, these are the three most obvious choices.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 – Xbox Games Showcase 2024

Before Microsoft started releasing video game consoles, it made flight simulators. This storied hardcore flying simulation franchise is getting a new entry this year, aptly named Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. The latest entry in the Microsoft Flight Simulator series builds upon the strong foundation of its revival in 2020. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 not only sees improved environmental simulation, visuals, and physics, but lots of new content as well. There are now missions where players can participate in aerial firefighting, search and research, and more. While the appeal of simulators like this one is someone niche, those looking for a new flight simulator will adore this game.

Spyro in the Spyro Reignited Trilogy.

November is shaping up to be a quieter month for Xbox Game Pass than October, but some solid titles are still hitting Microsoft's game subscription service. This week, the three recent additions I'm recommending all have one thing in common: You don't play as humans in them. If you want to let out some steam and relax this weekend, become a dragon, goat, or turnip and cause some mayhem in these games.

Following in the footsteps of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and two StarCraft games, Spyro Reignited Trilogy is the latest Activision Blizzard title to finally make its way to Xbox Game Pass. Developed by the now independent Toys for Bob, this is a remake collection of the first three games in the Spyro series: Spyro the Dragon, Sypro 2: Ripto's Rage!, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon. Those were excellent innovative 3D platforms on PS1 and faithfully re-created by Toys for Bob with vibrant new visuals for the Reignited Trilogy. Spyro has yet to get a new current-gen game like Crash Bandicoot, so check this out if you want to show Xbox and Activision that there's demand for more.

This is a good week for strategy game fans subscribed to Xbox Game Pass because November's first new additions to the service all fall within that genre. Two of them are real-time strategy game classics from Blizzard Entertainment, and the other is a strategic take on an arcade classic. If you're playing on a console, these additions may not mean as much to you, but for Game Pass subscribers with access to a PC, these recently added strategy game games are well worth your time.
StarCraft: Remastered
StarCraft Remastered Announcement

The original StarCraft is a monumental release for Blizzard Entertainment. It gave the studio a third pillar franchise alongside Warcraft and Diablo, was one of the first major esports games, and set a standard that most RTS games after it have tried to follow. In 2017, Blizzard released StarCraft: Remastered, updating the classics' visuals, audio, and online features; that's the version of StarCraft that has come to Xbox Game Pass. While there are more approachable RTS games nowadays, PC gamers should check out the original StarCraft if they've never played it before to better understand the foundational building blocks of the RTS genre.
