Get your first look at Yakuza 8, which features Japanese MMA fighter Mikuru Asakura

Ryu Ga Gotoku has provided the first glimpse of Yakuza 8 off-screen footage through a video tour of its studio. Additionally, Japanese MMA fighter Mikuru Asakura will appear in the game.

In the studio tour video, footage of Yakuza 8 can be seen on the developers’ computer screens. This confirms that the main protagonist Ichiban Kasuga is returning, as well as his buddies Koichi Adachi and Yu Nanba.

Further along in the video, Sega president Haruki Satomi and RGG president Masayoshi Yokoyama meet with Asakura to offer him a spot in the game. Asakura accepts it and then goes in for his 3D modeling and motion capture shoot.

Satomi and Yokoyama both note that players will be able to experience a new city in Yakuza 8, and also that RGG is currently developing another separate game.

What RGG’s other game could be is currently unknown. Perhaps it could be a remaster or remake of older Yakuza games that were never released outside of Japan, like the two PlayStation Portable titles, Black Panther: Like a Dragon New Chapter and Black Panther 2: Like a Dragon Ashura Chapter, or 2014’s Yakuza Ishin. The project could also be an entirely new IP.

Yakuza 8 was already confirmed to be in development earlier this year when RGG revealed that it had made changes to its executive leadership roster after series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi left Sega to join Netease.

Yakuza 8 is currently the working title for the Japanese version of the game. Yakuza 7 was localized as Yakuza: Like a Dragon for its international release, so Yakuza 8 might follow a similar naming convention.

So far, no other information about Yakuza 8 has been revealed yet, such as which platforms the game will be on.

Sega explains why it’s officially ditching the Yakuza name for Like a Dragon
Sakamoto Ryōma holds a sword in Like a Dragon: Ishin!

The Yakuza name is no more, as Sega plans to officially rebrand the series of crime dramas under the franchise name "Like a Dragon" moving forward -- a move that became apparent with the reveal of three new games prior to this year's Tokyo Game Show. Speaking to Digital Trends, a Sega of America representative confirmed the reason for the name change.
"I can confirm the series will be known as "Like a Dragon" moving forward to more closely align with the Japanese name," a representative for Sega of America tells Digital Trends.
In Japan, Sega has called the series Ryū ga Gotoku since its inception in 2005, and that phrase is even the namesake of developer RGG Studio. "Ryū ga Gotoku" translates to "like a dragon" in English, but Sega decided to call the series Yakuza when it brought the first game to the West in 2006. Now that the series is more popular than ever and largely moved on from telling stories directly focused on the Yakuza, it makes sense for Sega to give the series a similar title in all regions. Sega localization producer Scott Strichart pointed out on Twitter that 2020's Yakuza: Like a Dragon foreshadowed the change by naming a chapter "Chapter 12: The End of Yakuza." Strichart is not involved with the localization of upcoming Like a Dragon titles.

It'll feature the return of Kazuma Kiryu, whose appearance will be explained in a new spinoff title: Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name.

The game will star both Yakuza: Like a Dragon protagonist Ichiban Kasuga and series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu. This time around Kiryu sports a new, gray hairstyle. According to RGG, this will be the largest game in the series to date. It will feature turn-based RPG combat again and it seems like Kiryu will have his own party to romp around with.
