Now-canceled ‘Daredevil’ was one of Netflix’s most popular shows

Confirming a rumor that had been circulating since Netflix canceled both its Iron Fist and Luke Cage series, the streaming service added Daredevil to the list of Marvel collaborations that won’t be getting another season, even as reports suggest it was one of the service’s most popular shows.

Netflix made the series’ end official in a statement to Deadline, but left the door open to future projects involving the character outside of the streaming service. The announcement came a little over a month after the third season of Daredevil premiered and the ax fell on Iron Fist and Luke Cage following both shows’ second seasons.

According to data research firm Parrot AnalyticsDaredevil ranked fourth among all Netflix shows in popularity the weeks before and after it was canceled, ranking only behind NarcosChilling Adventures of Sabrina, and perennial favorite Stranger Things. Although Netflix doesn’t release any official viewership data, the numbers seem to confirm that the series’ popularity might not have played a significant role in the decision to cancel it.

“Marvel’s Daredevil will not return for a fourth season on Netflix,” said the company in a statement confirming the cancellation. “We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season, and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note. We’re thankful to our partners at Marvel, showrunner Erik Oleson, the show’s writers, stellar crew, and incredible cast — including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself — and we’re grateful to the fans who have supported the show over the years.

“While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel,” the streaming service added, suggesting that this might not be the last we see of the protector of Hell’s Kitchen.

The fates of the third season of Jessica Jones and the second season of The Punisher are still unknown, but given that both seasons have already been filmed, it’s increasingly likely that the two shows — the only two remaining series in Marvel’s collaboration with Netflix — will also be canceled after those seasons premiere.

With the third season of Daredevil receiving some of the best reviews of all the Marvel series on Netflix so far, the announcement would seem to confirm the recent spate of cancellations doesn’t stem from a lack of critical acclaim. The report on the Daredevil cancellation indicates that there was some behind-the-scenes strife at play in the decision to end Daredevil, but the reason is more likely rooted in how much the direct-to-consumer streaming video environment has changed since Netflix and Marvel first announced their collaboration back in 2013.

These days, Netflix offers its subscribers a host of award-winning, wildly popular movie and television projects it retains full ownership of instead of sharing with Disney or other licensing or production partners. Disney, on the other hand, has its own Disney+ streaming service set to launch in 2019 with a slate of original Marvel, Star Wars, Disney, and Pixar content, among other properties. Where a collaboration to bring the Marvel brand to streaming audiences had been mutually beneficial just shy of six years ago, each company no longer has the same level of need for what the other offers.

There’s no official word at this point regarding when — if ever — Netflix will air the new seasons of Jessica Jones and The Punisher that have already been filmed.

5 movies leaving Netflix in January 2025 you have to watch now
Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty.

The start of the new year is starting to hit the rearview mirror. As we progress into January, Netflix will start to release more movies from its 2025 slate. One of the first major Netflix originals of 2025 is Back in Action, starring Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz. Released on January 17, Back in Action had the biggest premiere weekend for an English-language movie since 2022's The Adam Project.
Back in Action will remain on Netflix for a long time. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for these five movies, which are leaving at the end of the month. Schedule some time to watch some of these films before heading to a new streaming service or rental service. Our picks include a 2012 action comedy, a political thriller, and a hilarious spoof on teen movies.
We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.
21 Jump Street (2012)

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum should not work as a comedic tandem on paper. However, the two actors form a hilarious tag team in 21 Jump Street, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's action comedy based on the 1987 TV show of the same name. In the early 2000s, high school students Morton Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Greg Janko (Tatum) are complete opposites. Schmidt is a nerdy outcast, while Jenko is a popular jock.
Seven years later, the duo become unlikely friends while studying to become police officers. Their first assignment is to go undercover as high school students to infiltrate a drug ring and find the suppliers. This time, Schmidt fits in with the cool kids, while Janko bonds with the geeks. Yet the duo quickly realizes that high school isn't any easier the second time around.

3 underrated shows on Netflix you need to watch in January 2025
Peter Hermann, Sutton Foster, and Nico Tortorella in Younger.

After closing out strong in 2024, Netflix is keeping the momentum going with an exciting slate of new and returning shows this month. One of the most popular shows on Netflix, The Night Agent, returns with a new mission in season 2 on January 23. Speaking on missions, The Recruit, an espionage adventure series, returns for its sophomore season one week later on January 30.

Those are only two of the many shows available to stream with the click of a button. From dramas and comedies to horrors and thrillers, Netflix always adds more shows to its vault every month. Some of these shows are criminally underrated and deserve recognition. Examples of these undervalued shows include a TV Land sitcom, a wrestling program, and a superhero drama.

If you have to watch one Netflix movie in January 2025, stream this one
Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen and Natasha Lyonne in His Three Daughters

Finding things to stream at the beginning of the year can be difficult. The rush of holiday content has come and gone, and January can sometimes be a relatively dry month. As a result, this month can also be the perfect time to catch up with things you might have missed on services like Netflix.

If you're looking to do exactly that, we'd recommend starting with one of the most acclaimed movies of 2024. His Three Daughters tells the story of three daughters who come together as their father approaches death. The movie is set almost entirely in one New York City apartment and focuses almost completely on how the daughters each deal with both each other and their grief. Here are three reasons you should check it out in January.
