Pyle’s PHBT5 headphones offer wireless sound for any budget

Pyle audio, a company perhaps best known for rumbling car trunks with its beefy Pyle Driver amplifiers, unveiled a product of a different animal today, just in time to be added to your holiday shopping list. Pyle released the second generation of its PHBT5 wireless headphones this morning, and if you’re looking for a tech-y gift for a gadget fan in your circle, these $40 Bluetooth bombers just might be the answer.

Boasting a sleek wraparound headband design and compact ear cups in a multitude of available colors, the PHBT5 have a modern look that caters to a wide array of users. The autonomous cans also offer a bevy of options considering their meager price tag, including a rechargeable battery with an extended 10 hour runtime and 200 hours standby, Bluetooth version 3.0, a noise canceling microphone for receiving calls, and onboard controls for play, pause, song search, volume, and calling.

While we haven’t heard the PHBT5, we’re guessing they probably won’t be an audiophile’s choice for wireless listening. But their sheer affordability makes it easy for anyone to get into the cordless audio arena without breaking the bank. And with a rainbow of color options, from black to hot pink, they should fit the bill as a stocking stuffer for a variety of music lovers on your list.

Focal’s first wireless headphones promise ANC and hi-fi sound for $799

Well-heeled audiophiles now have a new choice when it comes to wireless headphones. Focal, the French audio icon known for its superb but pricey wired headphones, has released its first-ever Bluetooth, noise-canceling headphones, the $799 Focal Bathys. The black and silver cans are available starting October 4 at a limited selection of retailers.

The Bathys take their name from the word bathyscaphe, a specialized submarine capable of extremely deep dives, which, Focal says, is the embodiment of absolute silence and calm. Focal fans will find plenty of familiar touches, like the Bathys' deeply padded, leather-wrapped ear cushions and headband, a set of perforated earcup grilles that use Focal's distinct multi-circle pattern, and high-quality materials like aluminum and magnesium.

When we received the Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless, it seemed clear they took direct aim at Sony's WH-1000XM5 and, by extension, the Sony WH-1000XM4. Comfort
Momentum 4 Wireless
Though they don't have an especially plush amount of padding on the underside of the headband, the Momentum 4 Wireless manage to feel extremely comfortable for long periods of wear. Between well-cushioned earpads, well-measured clamping force, and generally light overall weight, the Momentum 4 Wireless should curry favor with frequent fliers and anyone else who wears their headphones for extended periods.
Sony XM 5
The XM5 are the lightest yet in Sony's vaunted XM series headphones and are generally considered sufficiently comfortable for heavy users, though perhaps not as luxuriously appointed as the Bose ANC 700. However, we have noticed that after several hours of use, we begin to experience a sore spot at the top of our heads.

Sennheiser’s Momentum 4 Wireless headphones teaser looks a lot like Sony’s WH-1000XM5

In an unusual move for Sennheiser, the company has released an early sneak peek at its next flagship wireless headphones, the Momentum 4 Wireless. Only one photo of the product was included in the press release -- a close-up of the headband's intersection with the earcups -- but that's enough to tell us that Sennheiser is following in Sony's footsteps.

When Sony introduced its top-of-the-line WH-1000XM5 wireless headphones earlier this year, the biggest change from 2020's WH-1000XM4 was the design. Sony ditched the traditional earcup fork-based pivot in favor of a unified twisting and pivoting stem that enters the earcup from the top instead of the sides.
