Spotify Wrapped gives a personalized look at who you listened to most in 2019

Later this week, Spotify will be unveiling its personalized Wrapped stats. It’s a chance for Premium users to look back at the year that was and see which artists, songs, albums, genres, and podcasts captured their attention in 2019. Spotify has offered both a public and a personalized set of Wrapped stats in the past, but this year the company is expanding its view of the music and spoken-word world to an entire decade.

The Wrapped toolset, which also reveals facts like how many minutes of music you heard and how many songs you liked, has traditionally only been accessible via a custom website, making it a bit awkward to use. Last year, it required a bit of a hunt to find it. This year, however, Spotify is unlocking Wrapped’s potential as a social sharing opportunity: The Wrapped experience will also be available within the Spotify app itself, and share cards will be available for you to post on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat.

Beyond the annual opportunity to navel-gaze at our own music habits, Wrapped is an excellent opportunity to understand what the rest of the world is listening to. Given its massive global reach, Spotify is in a unique position to offer this perspective. Competing services like Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Google Play Music tend to have a much more U.S.-centric audience.

You might think this would reveal vast differences in how humans across the planet listen to music, but for the most part, the numbers reveal how we’re all heavily influenced by the strongest currents in music culture. Here’s a glimpse at the Wrapped stats for 2019, and the nine years that preceded it.

What is Spotify? Music, pricing, and features explained
Spotify app library screen.

When it comes to the best music streaming services out there, Spotify is probably the first app you think of. With 675 million users, and more than 260 million subscribers, it's miles ahead of competition like Apple Music. But what is Spotify, how does it work, and how much does it cost? We've got the answers to all your questions right here.
Let's take a look.
What is Spotify?

If you spend even a little time online, you've probably heard of Spotify. It's a popular free and paid music-streaming service founded in Stockholm in 2006 by Swedish friends Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon. Fun fact: the name happened by fluke when the partners were shouting names back and forth from different rooms in Ek's Stockholm flat, and Ek misheard one of Lorentzon's suggestions as "Spotify." They later backtracked the meaning as a combination of spot and identify, and there you have it.
Spotify today is a behemoth of a streaming service that also offers access to podcasts, videos, and highly tailored playlists driven by your unique usage. With several plan tiers to choose from, Spotify's free version lets you listen to unlimited music, podcasts, and even videos, so you can explore your taste without shelling out a thing, but you do have to endure ads and limited functionality (more on that below). It does offer much more robust paid options (more below, too), but the free version is more than enough for the casual listener.
Spotify is also quite device-versatile, so you can use it on your smartphone, tablet, computer, laptop, TV, smartwatch, gaming console, and even in your car. You get the expected, intuitive controls like play/pause, next/previous, loop a song/playlist, and save favorites. But that's not all. There's a lot that Spotify offers, so let's break down what you can look forward to.

How much is Spotify Premium, and can you get a deal?
An iPhone with the Search section of the Spotify app on it.

Spotify is one of the biggest platforms for listening to streaming music for good reason. It has more than 100 million songs, 6 million podcasts, and 350,000 audiobooks. This music streaming service is one of the most popular options out there, beating out both Apple Music and Amazon Music. However, Spotify does use ads for users listening for free. Thankfully there is an option to eliminate ads entirely.

Spotify has several tiers of Premium membership which deliver ad-free listening for a price. An individual membership is available for $12 each month, meanwhile you can snag a 2-person Spotify Premium Duo account for $17 monthly, or a Spotify Premium Student account for $6 each month. Families also have options built for them. The Spotify Basic Family account is $17 monthly, while a Spotify Premium Family account is $20.
