Tablo’s four-tuner/antenna bundle is just about perfect

It’s been a little while since our Tablo review crowned a new king of over-the-air television, and it’s time for a quick catch-up. To recap, Tablo is a little device that lets you plug in an over-the-air antenna and watch live broadcast TV on any number of devices, from phones and tablets to streaming platforms and smart TVs. It has 128GB of on-board storage, which Tablo says is good for 50 hours of shows and can be expanded to 8TB.

At the time, we reviewed a two-tuner model. A four-tuner model was released a little while later. And if you think you might need to watch OTA television on more than two devices at once — or record multiple shows while watching multiple shows — it might well be worth the extra $40.

And Tablo now has a bundle with the four-tuner device and a 35-mile indoor over-the-air antenna . We’ll caution you that an outdoor antenna may well be better than an indoor antenna — it all depends on your setup and which direction you need it to face. But if you’re looking for something simple and easy to set up, it’s tough to beat this.

Tablo has app support for Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Google TV, and Android and iOS smartphones. What we’re still waiting on support for Apple TV hardware, in addition to smart TVs from Samsung, LG, and Vizio. Tablo still has that listed as arriving “in the coming months.”

The YouTube/NBCUniversal flap is why you need an over-the-air antenna
Clearstream 2Max HDTV Antenna.

There is little I loathe more than when two multi billion-dollar companies fight — and drag their customers into the fray. But such is what's happened yet again, this time with YouTube TV and NBCUniversal going at it over what are known as carriage rights. That is, the deal that allows YouTube TV to carry channels owned by NBCUniversal.

Sometimes those deals are renewed with nary a peep. Other times, one side wants more money than the other is willing to pay, or it wants to inject some other terms that are deemed unacceptable, and everyone starts to do their dance. One side says the other is is going to take away your channels. The other side says it's being perfectly reasonable and just wants things to stay as they were before. Then comes the all-caps crawl across your screen, warning you that UNLESS YOU CALL YOUR CABLE/SATELLITE/STREAMING SERVICE, YOU WILL LOSE CHANNELS AND NOBODY WILL LIKE YOU ANYMORE.

Locast shutters operations — here’s how to keep watching your local channels
Locast

Locast — the nonprofit service that streamed local broadcast TV channels from a few dozen major markets — has shut down for good after a temporary injunction became permanent, following initial summary judgment by a federal court. (That basically means the judge effectively said there's no way you're ever going to win this, and there's absolutely no need for a trial to waste everyone's time.)

On September 2, Locast sent an email that simply stated the following:
Locast Nation: As a nonprofit, Locast was designed from the very beginning to operate in accordance with the strict letter of the law, but in response to the court’s recent rulings, with which we respectfully disagree, we are hereby suspending operations, effective immediately.
Thank you.

Most exciting TVs of 2025 – from CES
most exciting 2025 tvs

Now that I’m back at home and I’ve washed the Vegas off of me and out of my clothes, I’m looking back on the absolute nut-fest that was CES. It was somewhat like a big family reunion.

There is the family of journalists running around trying to scoop each other, skipping dinner and fun parties to type frantically late into the night; the family of YouTubers armed with cameras and caffeine and, ultimately, cocktails; and the family of brand reps we’ve come to know over the years whose feet definitely hurt as much as everyone else’s, but you won’t hear them complaining about it.
