Friday smart lock finally ships two years after its initial crowdfunding success

One popular smart-home device lets you toss the tacky key ring and gain access to your house through your smartphone. There’s no shortage of these solutions on the market, but many of them are clunkier than your dumb lock. The Friday Lock, however, aims to be a bit more inconspicuous, and two years after being successfully crowdfunded on Indiegogo, it’s finally shipping.

The smart lock, which is quite similar to August’s product, comes in several interchangeable styles including wood, steel, and porcelain. Size matters from an aesthetics standpoint, and this lock’s small dimensions (2.7 inches wide by 1.87 inches high) won’t overpower your front door, as some other smart locks can. It operates off of Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, allowing you fidget-free entry upon arrival to your abode.

Compatible with Apple HomeKit and Thread, the device is installed on the inside of the door, so passersby won’t even know it’s there. Unscrew your deadbolt, insert the baseplate, then attach the Friday lock. If your phone loses juice, you can still unlock the door via the web. The same is true if you lose your phone. Since the device mounts over most single-cylinder deadbolts, your traditional key will still work when you need a plan B.

If someone attempts to gain entry or tinker with your lock, Friday instantly transmits an alert to your phone. You can also allow temporary or permanent entry to friends and cancel such settings at any time.

Early Indiegogo backers have begun receiving their locks, and if you’re interested in getting one yourself, you can order one from Friday’s website for $249. It’s still an extremely new product, however, so user experiences have been a bit mixed. While some have applauded the lock’s “amazing quality,” others have commented about Bluetooth connectivity issues, and trouble with installation.

But hey, now that the lock is shipping, you can make that judgment call for yourself.

My home is overrun with smart gadgets, and the main way I interact with them is through my smartphone. Ring’s new Smart Video Search uses AI to quickly scour your motion history

Ring has revealed a new AI-powered feature called Smart Video Search that’s currently being tested in public beta. The goal is to make it easier than ever to find specific moments in your video history by allowing you to enter a text description of an event, which will then be used to scour your motion events for a clip that matches your input.

Smart Video Search uses a combination of Ring AI and Visual Language Modeling (VLM) to quickly search your video history based on a text description. For example, if you search for “red bicycle in the driveway,” your Ring app will automatically pull up any clips that feature -- you guessed it -- a red bike in your driveway.

Home Depot expands Hubspace with a smart door, smart lock, and other cool gadgets

Home Depot held its Hubspace Fall Preview event today, showcasing a variety of smart home products arriving later this year. One of the coolest new additions to the catalog is the Smart Glass Door by Feather River Doors, as it lets you toggle between clear or opaque glass via voice commands and syncs with most smart home platforms. Home Depot also revealed a smart lock, smart freezer, string lights, and home alarm system -- all of which are fully supported by the simple-to-use Hubspace app.

The Smart Glass Door is undoubtedly the most unique item in the upcoming collection. Pricing starts at $798 with a launch date of September 30, and it’s looking to bring some seriously cool features to your home. The big allure is the central glass pane, which can quickly change between clear and opaque styles using voice commands or a physical button. That means you can activate clear mode when you want a bit of sunshine, then swap to opaque mode for privacy. Beyond Hubspace, it integrates with Alexa and Google Assistant.
