Samsung imitates Apple’s ‘Shot on iPhone’ ads with the Galaxy S7

Samsung recently hit the airwaves with a new advertisement for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. The ad appears to have drawn inspiration from Apple’s “Shot on iPhone” campaign, as Samsung calls its commercial, “Captured on Galaxy S7.” If you head over to YouTube and check the comment section, both Samsung and Apple fans are being rather vocal about their thoughts on the obvious “inspiration” Samsung has taken from its rival in this marketing campaign.

Apple has run its “Shot on iPhone” campaign for more than a year, and it has been a major success. The campaign won an award for best entry in the outdoor category at last year’s Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. It’s no wonder Samsung would want a piece of that cake, but in applying Apple’s theme, it seems to have lost one of the campaign’s most integral components. Personality.

Samsung doesn’t claim that the video was shot by actual Galaxy S7 owners. Even though the footage was captured in 4K Ultra HD video on a Galaxy S7, the shots are eerily stable and professional. In contrast, Apple brought along personality in its ad by including consumer material in the campaign to make it feel more human and real. Samsung’s footage of mountains, people biking, and time-lapses of urban landscapes all looks fantastic, but its ad hardly seems as down to Earth as Apple’s approach.

Other companies including Motorola and Huawei have imitated the “Shot on iPhone” ads in presentations and their own marketing campaigns without much success before. Samsung is just the latest brand to try it out. However, using footage from the actual camera advertised isn’t a new concept to Samsung, the company used that technique back in 2013 to market its Samsung Galaxy Camera.

The Samsung Galaxy S25 is just around the corner. We expect it to be announced on January 22 at the Galaxy Unpacked event that's expected to be happening that day, and a new leak further corroborates that information while adding in a few more tidbits we didn't know before.

Tipster Jukanlosreve shared the news on X, citing a "very reliable" source that confirmed the Galaxy S25 will officially be on sale in Korea (and presumably the U.S.) on February 7. In addition, the leaker says the Slim model will also be shown at the Unpacked event.

Samsung has taken steps in the past to handle leaks, but that hasn't slowed the flow of information this year. The Samsung Galaxy S25 lineup barely has any secrets left given all the information we've seen emerge over the past several months, but now we have mostly clear renders of the Galaxy S25 Plus and Galaxy S25 Ultra.

Tipster Evan Blass shared the renders on X, and the images show the differences in design between the flagship devices. The Galaxy S25 Plus has corners with a more distinct curve, while the Galaxy S25 Ultra has more angular corners.

We've speculated a lot on when the Samsung Galaxy S25 will officially launch, and there have been no small number of rumors. Now, though, we have everything but an official announcement as a leaked event poster states that Galaxy Unpacked will be held on January 22, 2025.

Evan Blass, a tipster with a reliable and proven track record, first shared the information on X. Since the initial post, the image has been removed due to a copyright claim, but you can see what it looked like below. The date on the poster lines up with previous leaks that also place the event on January 22, giving us almost a guarantee on the date.
