Latest Google Pixel update lets users pin Google Pay to the power button menu

Google’s latest Feature Drop, a monthly update with new user-facing features for Pixel phones, has arrived. Along with the March security patch, it brings a handful of overdue additions Google Pixel owners have been requesting for a while.

The biggest of them all is the revamped power button menu. In addition to the existing set of shortcuts, users can now quickly access their Google Pay cards, boarding passes, and other payment methods by long-pressing the power key — similar to what iOS has been offering for years. On the Google Pixel 4, you will also be able to view your emergency health data and contacts.

On top of that, Google Pay is gaining support for boarding passes. Starting with this update, you can simply take a screenshot of your ticket’s bar code and Google Pay will automatically fetch its details as well as send you real-time flight updates. This is, however, limited to the Google Pixel 3, 3a, and 4 phones and will be available in most regions such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Singapore, where Google Pay is available.

What’s more, the March Feature Drop comes with a new automation tool called Rules. It allows you to essentially automate a bunch of basic settings based on network and location triggers. For instance, you can set a rule for putting your phone on silent as soon as you are connected to your office’s Wi-Fi.

Automatic Brightness has gotten an upgrade as well. It can now boost your phone’s brightness when it detects it is under direct sunlight. Google is oddly also bringing an Android 11 feature to Android 10 phones: An option to switch between dark and light themes depending on the sunrise and sunset times.

Furthermore, the update houses a couple of fresh Pixel 4-exclusive features. Just as on iPhones, Google is adding the ability to create 3D photos for Facebook and apply the Color Pop filter right from the Pixel 4’s camera app. Plus, there’s a new Motion Sense gesture that lets you play or pause by “tapping the air above the phone.”

The update is rolling out to Google Pixel 3, 3a, and 4 phones in phases. There’s no word at the moment on whether it will be extended to the Pixel 1 and 2 series.

The future of the Google Pixel Tablet doesn’t look good
Google Pixel Tablet on its charging dock.

Google’s Pixel lineup has been pretty solid lately -- at least, for most of its hardware, anyway. But there’s one Google Pixel device that seems to have flopped so hard that it may end up being a one-off thing, and that’s the Pixel Tablet.

If you’re hoping to hear some news about a proper Pixel Tablet 2, we have some bad news. According to a recent report from Android Headlines, it seems that Google has already canceled plans for a Pixel Tablet 3. But wait! Another report on Android Authority claims that it was actually the Pixel Tablet 2 that was canned, not the Pixel Tablet 3. Considering that you can’t have a third iteration before having a second, I think it’s safe to say that whatever the next version was going to be, we’re not going to see it — at least not for a while.

The Pixel Watch is about to get a long-awaited software update
The Google Pixel Watch 3 lying on top of a plant.

For the most part, Google has issued an update to the Pixel Watch roughly once a month. Most were simple security updates, while others included new features and OS upgrades. Fans expected an update in October, but Google delayed it until this month. This update will resume the rollout of Wear OS 5 to Pixel Watch 1 and Pixel Watch 2 users after a series of crashes caused Google to pause it back in September. After several months of work, the company has addressed the cause of the crashes and is confident that yesterday's update will be stable.

In addition to Wear OS 5, the update will also include better camera controls and changes to the Pixel Recorder app, which will be available through the Play Store. Your individual watch will notify you when the update is available for download, so you don't have to constantly check for it. The first update for the Pixel Watch 3 since its launch is also coming with bug fixes and security updates. All Pixel Watch models will eventually update to version AW2A.241105.012, although when the update happens will depend on both the carrier and the device.

Google has paused its latest Pixel Watch update. Here’s why

On Thursday, we discussed the issues that some Google Pixel Watch and Google Pixel Watch 2 owners were experiencing while trying to install the Wear OS 5 update on their devices. Google has now temporarily halted the update and stopped its rollout to users.

After installing the Wear OS 5 update, many users of the first two Pixel watches experienced a blank display. Some users reported that the issue resolved itself after they followed a few steps. Google's decision to pull the update unofficially confirms that the issue with Wear OS 5 is real and likely affecting many Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 users.
