HTC’s next flagship Android phone will be announced on March 25

Check out our review of the HTC One M8 smartphone.

HTC has told us to circle March 25 on our calendars, at which time it promises ‘The best will get better.’ What could it mean? Well, the event is almost certainly to announce HTC’s new flagship phone, currently known under the HTC M8 codename. The news comes via the official HTC UK Twitter account, and other sources are saying the company will hold joint events in New York and London on the day.

HTC’s follow-up to the One has been rumoured for several months, and may be named the HTC One Two, the HTC One+ or something else entirely. Its debut will come just over a year after the One’s launch, and the event’s late March date means the phone won’t be on display during Mobile World Congress. Although we’ll probably never know, HTC may have taken this decision to avoid clashing with Samsung’s big announcement, which is expected to be the Galaxy S5.

Samsung’s new flagship phone is sure to attract plenty of attention in Barcelona, and HTC is wise to avoid competing with it. It’ll only be a brief respite though, as the two phones will do battle in stores soon after the show ends.

HTC hasn’t shared any technical details concerning its new phone, but there has been plenty of speculation regarding it. The screen size may increase to 5-inches, although the resolution will probably remain at 1080p, and a quad-core processor, most likely the Snapdragon 800 will probably power the device. Leaked images seem to show a mysterious second camera lens on the phone’s rear panel, and reports suggest this new UltraPixel setup will improve quality and provide user definable depth of focus settings.

realme 7 pro hands on features price photos release date camera

Realme has shared a look at its upcoming flagship smartphones, which comprise the Realme 8 series. Following the Realme 7 series, the company is looking to innovate and improve on its camera performance from the last generation, and it's doing so with Samsung's 108-megapixel, ISOCELL HM2 camera sensor. Realme is another phone company from the BBK Electronics stable, alongside OnePlus, Oppo, and Vivo, and is getting a reputation for making incredible value devices.

Launching a generation after Samsung's ISOCELL HM1 camera found in the Galaxy S20 Ultra, the ISOCELL HM2 predates the ISOCELL HM3 camera in Samsung's new S21 series by just a few months, but it's still impressive. Samsung says the "image sensor is perfectly engineered for today’s thinner, lighter smartphones, so you can carry a pro-grade camera right in your pocket wherever you go".

Cost-cutting strips Pixel 9a of the best Gemini AI features in Pixel 9
Person holds Pixel 9a in hand while sitting in a car.

The Pixel 9a has been officially revealed, and while it's an eye candy, there are some visible cutbacks over the more premium Pixel 9 and 9 Pro series phones. The other cutbacks we don't see include lower RAM than the Pixel 9 phones, which can limit the new mid-ranger's ability to run AI applications, despite running the same Tensor G4 chipset.

Google's decision to limit the RAM to 8GB, compared to the 12GB on the more premium Pixel 9 phones, sacrifices its ability to run certain AI tasks locally. ArsTechnica has reported that as a result of the cost-cutting, Pixel 9a runs an "extra extra small" or XXS variant -- instead of the "extra small" variant on Pixel 9 -- of the Gemini Nano 1.0 model that drives on-device AI functions.
