Amazon adds a color-changing, eye-saving screen to the high-end Kindle Oasis

If you’re looking for an ebook reader, there’s no shortage of excellent options regardless of your budget. But if money is no object and you want the absolute best experience, then Amazon’s premium Kindle Oasis has long been our pick for the best ebook reader you can buy. But the best just got better — say hello to the new Amazon Kindle Oasis with an adjustable display light.

In reality, this is a fairly minor update. The only change is the addition of a screen light that can change color tone from a cool, blue tone to a warmer, yellow tone. Shifting to a warmer light at nighttime can help to reduce strain on your eyes, making it easier to read a few pages before you sink into bed. You can set the warmth to alter over time, updating automatically between sunset and sunrise, and if you’re not a fan of strong yellows, then you can lessen the effect or even turn it off completely.

Even if you’re not a fan of the color tone shifting, there’s still a lot to love here. The new Kindle Oasis is thin and light, making it easy to hold for a long time. Dedicated page-turning buttons in the device’s oversized side grip make it easy to read with just a single hand, while the device’s 7-inch Paperwhite display delivers a sharp picture with 300 pixels per inch (PPI). It’s also protected against water ingress, with an IPX8 rating for wate resistance, which means it can survive in up to 2 meters of fresh water for up to 60 minutes, so you can feel free to take it into the bath or chill with it by the pool. After all, aren’t holidays the best time to catch up on some reading?

The new Kindle Oasis is now available. Like its predecessors, it’s not the cheapest ebook reader around. Grabbing the 8GB version of the Kindle Oasis will cost $250, while the 32GB variant will set you back $280. If that price is a little steep for you, then please note that this year’s Amazon Kindle is much cheaper, though it lacks the sharp screen, water-resistance, and blue-light filter.

I used a Kindle for the first time in 10 years and it totally changed how I read
Amazon Kindle (2022) Store

As someone who writes for a living, I admit that I don’t read as much as I should — at least as far as actual books go. On a daily basis, most of my reading is done through various online news media, but that’s pretty much a part of my job. In my free time, I simply find it hard to make time to pick up a book and read (and even write creatively).

I used to love reading books when I was younger, and when e-readers were first becoming popular in the early 2000s, I thought they were fantastic. I picked up my first Kindle over 10 years ago, and I liked the fact that I could carry a collection of books with me everywhere. But I eventually got lazy with book reading. And it remained that way for about a decade. But then I got a chance to check out the Kindle (2022) this year, and I’ve been enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. In fact, it's basically reignited my love for reading.

Amazon made the bezel on the new Kindle Paperwhite thinner — I hate it
A person reads on an Amazon Kindle Paperwhite outdoors.

Amazon announced its new Kindle Paperwhite lineup recently following months of rumors. At first, I was ecstatic to see new Paperwhite models. As an avid follower of all e-book readers, I own most of the Kindle lineup, a handful of Kobo and Nook devices, and even an Onyx Boox Nova 3, so I didn't think twice about intending to buy the new Paperwhite.

After all, it's been three years since a Paperwhite model hit the market (the Oasis was released in 2019). It's long overdue for features like the warmer screen temperature, USB-C charging, wireless charging, a bigger screen, and longer-lasting battery life. Amazon's Kindle devices may hold the largest e-reader share in the U.S. and U.K. markets but competitors like the Barnes & Noble Glowlight 3 and the Kobo Forma both boast a warmer reading light, bigger size options, and were the first to roll out with features like waterproofing so it's nice to see Amazon catch up.
