Motorola, Cingular Debut V557

Cingular Wireless today announced they had begun sales of the Motorola V557 flip phone. It is priced for as low as $99.99 with a two year service plan.

The V557, said Motorola, is the first phone to incorporate the company’s SCREEN3 technology. SCREEN3 pushes information out to a cell phone’s idle screen in a “ticker tape” that runs along the bottom of screen. Consumers can get news, sports, entertainment and other information sent to them without the need to push phone buttons or open a browser window.

The patent addresses how we may eventually unlock the phone using a fingerprint sensor. When the phone’s screen is raised or retracted, a single fixed-position, in-display fingerprint sensor wouldn’t always work, so Motorola is experimenting with multiple fingerprint sensors and a larger activation area to solve the problem.
