Samsung issued good news today on the sales of it flagship Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge phones. According to The Korea Times, an executive claims that Samsung will sell more than 70 million units by the end of 2015, thanks to 20+ million pre-orders and strong demand at launch.
Executives originally projected sales of 38 million units by the end of the year. In early March, Samsung changed its tune and boasted a projection of 46 million. In contrast, the Galaxy S5 ended up selling 40 percent less units than Samsung estimated.
Despite the good news, total sales of the phone are unlikely to challenge the iPhone, which exceeded 70 million during the 2014 holiday season alone.
The new redesigned Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge were released to the general public on April 10, and judging by the rate at which the units are moving, sales should stay strong through the end of the year. The new devices feature higher quality glass and metal work, which Samsung hopes will sustain interest in the handset. Much like the iPhone, the new Galaxy phones no longer have removable batteries or MicroSD cards, giving them sleeker form factors.

This turn around comes after Samsung Electronics had an abysmal 2014, with profits dropping a handful of quarters in a row. Samsung announced that it would focus on less products per year in order to put out a quality smartphone that could compete with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
