Samsung just updated this two-year-old phone with a great new feature

When Samsung introduced Galaxy AI earlier this year, it initially only rolled out the tool to its flagship phones, which were released in 2022 and later. This meant phones like the Galaxy S21 FE did not receive new features like Circle to Search. However, this has finally changed.

According to SamMobile, Samsung’s August 2024 security update has added this feature to the Galaxy S21 FE.

Circle to Search allows you to search by circling, highlighting, or scribbling around the text or image you’re interested in. This feature lets you quickly look up definitions, find related information, or identify objects in photos or videos.

The Galaxy S21 “Fan Edition” was released one year after the flagship Galaxy S21 devices. It has a 6.4-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display and Exynos or Snapdragon chips. When the Galaxy S21 FE was launched, we were impressed with its strong cameras and powerful specifications, especially at its price points. However, we were less impressed with its battery life and touchscreen performance.

Of all the Galaxy AI features, only Circle to Search was available on the other Galaxy S21 models.

Similar to the upcoming Apple Intelligence, Galaxy AI is a set of artificial intelligence features built into Samsung’s Galaxy devices. It aims to improve different aspects of the smartphone experience, including photography, translation, productivity, and accessibility.

Samsung’s August 2024 security patch is currently being distributed worldwide. It is said to fix 50 Android and Samsung One UI security vulnerabilities. You can access the update by looking in the phone’s Settings > Software update menu and seeing whether it’s installed.

Samsung’s One UI 7 beta is out today. Here are all the new features

Samsung has started the official rollout of the latest version of its One UI software for Galaxy smartphones, and there’s a very good chance you can try it out today. One UI 7 has been released as a beta version and is available for Samsung Galaxy S24 smartphones in the U.S., the U.K., India, Korea, Germany, and Poland starting today, December 5. To try it out, you must sign up to join the beta program, but what features will you get if you do?
New design and simplified home screen
Samsung says One UI 7 has a “significant new look” and a “simple, impactful, and emotive design” that includes less clutter on the screen, new One UI widgets, and greater customization features to give you finer control over the look and function of the software. The home screen and the lock screen have been simplified, too.
Now Bar
The most intriguing new design feature in One UI 7 is the Now Bar. Unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait to try it out because it’s “set to be supported on upcoming Galaxy S series devices,” which means it’s probably not going to appear on the Galaxy S24 or earlier devices and won't be inside the beta version of the software you can try today.

The Now Bar is part of a new notification system that reduces the need to unlock your phone to view information or interact with notifications while also highlighting certain activities like music playback, the stopwatch, voice recording, and the AI Interpreter mode. Samsung claims the Now Bar will “transform the lock screen experience” and promises to support it with new features in the future. We may not get a look at the Now Bar until the Galaxy S25’s release, but it sounds a lot like Apple’s Dynamic Island and Live Activities features.

If you like Samsung’s Edge Panels, you may not like the One UI 7 update

You probably have at least 50 apps installed on your phone, if not significantly more — but you likely only use maybe 10 or so of those apps on a routine basis. Samsung's Edge Panels feature made it easy to access your most-used apps, but that feature is starting to go the way of the Dodo with the upcoming One UI 7 launch.

Samsung sent an email to users alerting them that Edge Panels will no longer work with the launch of One UI 7, and those users took to X to share the email. That said, it's not quite as straightforward as it might seem.

There’s a new Samsung Galaxy S25 spec leak, and it’s a bit disappointing

The Samsung Galaxy S25 series is still a couple of months away, but a new leak from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) website, first spotted by 91Mobiles, has given us a major sneak peek of what to expect. While a few of these specs were already expected, some others are a bit, well, disappointing.

From the FCC listings, there appear to be three models for the S25 line: SM–931U, SM–936U, and SM–938U. All three models will support 5G, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GNSS, and NFC connectivity. There is also mention of two models having an ultrawide band on them, but it looks to be just the Galaxy S25 Plus and S25 Ultra, which means the base model S25 will lack UWB. Features that use UWB include precision tracking with item trackers or locating lost devices, so those who end up with the base model S25 will miss out on such features.
