Samsung’s latest Galaxy Watch update improves fall detection, adds watch faces

Samsung today announced new software experiences coming to the Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, Galaxy Watch Active 2, and Galaxy Watch 3. These updates improve the health features of the older watches and bring in some minor Galaxy Watch 4 customization features.

The biggest changes in this update are the health-facing ones. Samsung’s watches have had the lifesaving fall detection tool for a while, but this new update helps improve it so that it can detect a fall that occurs while a person is simply standing. Previously, the Galaxy Watch 4 could only detect falls when someone was running or otherwise active, but it’ll now be able to do so if someone falls over while not doing anything at all. It’s customizable, so if you have a family member who might be at risk of sudden faints and needs extra monitoring, Samsung’s Galaxy Watches might be a good fit for them.

Speaking of family members, Samsung is also rolling out a new “group challenge” feature that lets people compare activity levels among selected friends or family members. Apple does this already with Apple Health, and now Samsung offering a similar feature for its own ecosystem.

Finally, Samsung is adding in a selection of 10 new watch faces. These came with the Galaxy Watch originally, but the company is backporting them to the older watches so users can enjoy a similar software experience on all watches. You still won’t have One UI Watch on those older watches, mind you, but Samsung’s doing a good job of keeping them as close and up to date as it can while still running two separate wearable operating systems.

In other news, Samsung also rolled out a new update for the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21 Ultra, bringing Android 12 and One UI 4 to its most recent flagships. A link that has since been removed shared that the company was adding those updates to most of its older devices by January.

The Pixel Watch is about to get a long-awaited software update
The Google Pixel Watch 3 lying on top of a plant.

For the most part, Google has issued an update to the Pixel Watch roughly once a month. Most were simple security updates, while others included new features and OS upgrades. Fans expected an update in October, but Google delayed it until this month. This update will resume the rollout of Wear OS 5 to Pixel Watch 1 and Pixel Watch 2 users after a series of crashes caused Google to pause it back in September. After several months of work, the company has addressed the cause of the crashes and is confident that yesterday's update will be stable.

In addition to Wear OS 5, the update will also include better camera controls and changes to the Pixel Recorder app, which will be available through the Play Store. Your individual watch will notify you when the update is available for download, so you don't have to constantly check for it. The first update for the Pixel Watch 3 since its launch is also coming with bug fixes and security updates. All Pixel Watch models will eventually update to version AW2A.241105.012, although when the update happens will depend on both the carrier and the device.

Samsung Galaxy S24 users can now download a new software update. Although it’s not the update people have been waiting for, it’s still important.

According to SamMobile, a new software update is being rolled out for the carrier-locked versions of the Galaxy S24, S24 Plus, and S24 Ultra. The firmware version for this update is S92xUSQS4AXJA, and it includes the November 2024 security patch. This update addresses multiple security vulnerabilities, but does not introduce any new features. Instead, it resolves dozens of security issues identified in the previous software version.
