Sky Kids offers the most popular TV shows just for kids

Compared to adults, children don’t have an extensive selection of shows and fun, visual content from providers such as Netflix and Hulu. One of Europe’s leading entertainment companies, Sky, is launching a new app aimed at meeting the needs of children who indulge in spending hours watching television.

Sky Kids is an app packing a wide range of popular kids television shows in one place. It is designed for kids as ranging from 2 1/2 to 9 years old, and includes hit shows like Nick Jr.’s Paw Patrol, Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time, and Boomerang’s Scooby Doo. Sky Kids features cartoon characters called Sky Buddies that will help guide children through the app. The “Buddies” will help kids find thousands of on-demand shows suitable for their age group.

During development, hundreds of children and parents were involved in the making of this app, according to the company’s press release. The app give parents the option to control how much access their children get by viewing the Sky Kids catalog. Sky Kids also lets parents create multiple age-appropriate profiles tailored to each child. In the future, the app will include a sleep mode setting that will let parents set a time they want the content to turn off.

“We have worked really closely with lots of children and their parents to design the new Sky Kids app,” says Sky’s head of kids content Lucy Murphy. “It means they can watch all their favourite shows in a really engaging way designed just for them. Safety is of fundamental importance so parents will be able to filter what their child watches according to their age.” In addition, Sky is aiming to launch original content for its young viewers, including new episodes of the animation short Morph.

Sky Kids is now available on Google Play and the App Store.

The Pixel 9a has been officially revealed, and while it's an eye candy, there are some visible cutbacks over the more premium Pixel 9 and 9 Pro series phones. The other cutbacks we don't see include lower RAM than the Pixel 9 phones, which can limit the new mid-ranger's ability to run AI applications, despite running the same Tensor G4 chipset.

Google's decision to limit the RAM to 8GB, compared to the 12GB on the more premium Pixel 9 phones, sacrifices its ability to run certain AI tasks locally. ArsTechnica has reported that as a result of the cost-cutting, Pixel 9a runs an "extra extra small" or XXS variant -- instead of the "extra small" variant on Pixel 9 -- of the Gemini Nano 1.0 model that drives on-device AI functions.
