Xiaomi celebrates turning five with phones, a TV, a scale, and a power socket — Wait, what?

Regardless of how you feel about the company, the fact that Xiaomi has now been around for five years shows the Chinese manufacturer might be here for the long haul. As a way to celebrate its birthday, Xiaomi announced a slew of new products, including, oddly enough, a smart scale.

Smartphones galore

Beginning with smartphones, Xiaomi announced a pink version of the Mi Note, the company’s flagship smartphone that was announced back in January. Apart from the fresh coat of paint, there isn’t anything different about the Mi Note Pink Edition.

Moving on, we now have a variant of the Mi Note with 2GB of RAM, as opposed to the 3GB found in the original. This allows Xiaomi to sell the device for around $270, a slight decrease from the original Mi Note’s $290 price tag.

Finally, for those with an extremely tight budget, the Redmi 2A might just be for you. Packing a 1.5GHz Leadcore LC1860 quad-core chipset, along with 1GB of RAM and a 4.7-inch 720p display, the Redmi 2A acts as a cheaper alternative to the Redmi 2. Coming in at just under a Benjamin (~$97), the handset also includes 4G LTE and two SIM card slots.

An affordable 4K television

Next up in Xiaomi’s birthday bash is an upscaled version of the Mi TV 2. This new model bumps the screen size from 40 to 55 inches, while increasing the resolution from 1080p to 4K. It’s powered by a quad-core Cortex A17 1.4GHz processor, along with 2GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage.

This Mi TV 2 model even includes a wireless soundbar, something we don’t see bundled with TVs very often. The TV will go for 5,000 Yuan (~$806), an aggressive price point in the 4K TV market.

A scale and a power socket?

Last, but certainly not least, we have two products that you wouldn’t normally see announced alongside a TV and smartphones: a scale and a power socket.

Mi Smart Scale

Starting with the Mi Smart Scale, we have a scale in line with the Fitbit Aria. It tracks your weight, body mass index, and other related information through the Mi Fit app. The scale is equipped with Bluetooth 4.0 to communicate with your phone. Where the Mi Smart Scale differs from the competition is in price. While the Fitbit Aria comes in at $100, the Mi Smart Scale severely undercuts it at just 99 Yuan ($16).

Smart Socket

The Smart Socket, meanwhile, includes three USB charging ports and supports fast charging. For those with kids, the socket is equipped with an internal shutter mechanism that prevents the little ones from getting hurt. Of course, it also acts as a surge protector.

Cost-cutting strips Pixel 9a of the best Gemini AI features in Pixel 9
Person holds Pixel 9a in hand while sitting in a car.

The Pixel 9a has been officially revealed, and while it's an eye candy, there are some visible cutbacks over the more premium Pixel 9 and 9 Pro series phones. The other cutbacks we don't see include lower RAM than the Pixel 9 phones, which can limit the new mid-ranger's ability to run AI applications, despite running the same Tensor G4 chipset.

Google's decision to limit the RAM to 8GB, compared to the 12GB on the more premium Pixel 9 phones, sacrifices its ability to run certain AI tasks locally. ArsTechnica has reported that as a result of the cost-cutting, Pixel 9a runs an "extra extra small" or XXS variant -- instead of the "extra small" variant on Pixel 9 -- of the Gemini Nano 1.0 model that drives on-device AI functions.
