Xiaomi’s Redmi 4 phones make you rethink what’s possible for less than $150

Even though Xiaomi is still a major player in the Chinese phone market, its position has been somewhat compromised in recent times by the likes of Huawei and many others. However, Xiaomi is out to prove it still has sway in the budget market with its trio of Redmi 4 phones.

Starting with the Redmi 4A, the exterior features a 5-inch, 1,280 x 720 resolution display, with a 5-megapixel selfie sensor above it and a 13MP camera around back. Keeping the phone ticking is a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 chipset and 2GB RAM, with the 16GB of storage expandable by up to an additional 128GB through the MicroSD card slot. Finally, the respectable 3,120mAh battery should make the Redmi 4A an all-day affair.

Moving on to the Redmi 4, which is split into two different versions: the Standard Edition and the Pro Edition. The Standard Edition, on the outside and under the surface, is mostly a carbon copy of the Redmi 4A, except for a few key differences. For example, whereas the latter does not feature a fingerprint sensor, a rear-mounted scanner can be found on the former. Furthermore, the Standard Edition steps up to the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 and a beefy 4,100mAh power pack.

Finally, the Pro Edition lives up to its name by opting for a 5-inch, 1,920 x 1,080 resolution display. Elsewhere, the Pro Edition opts for Qualcomm’s octa-core Snapdragon 625 chipset, the same processor that powers the Motorola Moto Z Play, and 3GB RAM. You will also get 32GB of storage, a nice boost from the 16GB found in the two other phones, though the MicroSD card slot is there if your needs are greater. Other than the aforementioned differences, however, the Pro Edition is very similar to the Standard Edition.

Unfortunately, it does not seem as if you can get your hands on any member of the Redmi 4 trio just yet — Xiaomi is currently testing its wares in the U.S., but gave no timetable for a possible launch. As such, you will have to settle for importing, though the price tags make that proposition much easier — $70 for the Redmi 4A, $104 for the Redmi 4 Standard Edition, and $133 for the Redmi 4 Pro Edition. All three phones will launch in November.

Cost-cutting strips Pixel 9a of the best Gemini AI features in Pixel 9

The Pixel 9a has been officially revealed, and while it's an eye candy, there are some visible cutbacks over the more premium Pixel 9 and 9 Pro series phones. The other cutbacks we don't see include lower RAM than the Pixel 9 phones, which can limit the new mid-ranger's ability to run AI applications, despite running the same Tensor G4 chipset.

Google's decision to limit the RAM to 8GB, compared to the 12GB on the more premium Pixel 9 phones, sacrifices its ability to run certain AI tasks locally. ArsTechnica has reported that as a result of the cost-cutting, Pixel 9a runs an "extra extra small" or XXS variant -- instead of the "extra small" variant on Pixel 9 -- of the Gemini Nano 1.0 model that drives on-device AI functions.
