This great Oscar-winning war movie is finally on Netflix. Here’s why you should watch it

In addition to recent hits like Rebel Ridge and Damsel, Netflix is now streaming a must-see classic with 1978’s The Deer Hunter. Directed by Michael Cimino (Heaven’s Gate), this epic film follows Michael, Nick, and Steven, three steelworker pals from Pennsylvania whose lives forever change after fighting in the Vietnam War. Released at a time when Hollywood rarely made films about the Vietnam War, The Deer Hunter received nine Oscar nominations and won five Academy Awards, including those for Best Picture and Best Director, becoming one of the most beloved and hotly discussed war films in cinema history.

The Deer Hunter remains controversial for the infamous “Russian Roulette” scene and depiction of the Vietnamese people. Despite this, Cimino’s revolutionary picture continues to be a powerful piece of anti-war cinema and an essential watch for film lovers. For those wondering what they should watch on their next movie night, here are three reasons they should pick The Deer Hunter.

Since it was made in the ’70s, The Deer Hunter features many acting legends in their prime, including Robert De Niro (Taxi Driver), Meryl Streep (Sophie’s Choice), John Savage (Hair), Christopher Walken (The Dead Zone), and John Cazale (The Godfather) in what would be his last cinematic performance.

De Niro and Streep stand out for their on-screen chemistry and their tender performances as Michael and Linda, respectively. Walken, in particular, gives the Oscar-winning performance of his life as Nick, who goes from being a sensitive young man engaged to be wed to a lonely, traumatized survivor addicted to gambling his life in the Saigon underworld.

When The Deer Hunter finally depicts Michael, Nick, and Steven in Vietnam, audiences see them suffer some extreme horrors. Most notably, they are imprisoned and forced to play Russian Roulette in the most suspenseful, heart-pounding scene in the entire film. Whether the Viet Cong played this morbid game in real life has long been debated by audiences. Nevertheless, this recurring symbol represents the true chaos and unpredictability of war, as well as the dehumanizing effects it has on people like those who fought in Vietnam.

Even after the protagonists survive the war and are allowed to return home, they still have trouble reintegrating into their civilian lives, with Nick outright staying in Saigon due to his PTSD. The harsh realities of the Vietnam War were barely shown in Hollywood films before The Deer Hunter, and the way this film depicted this nightmarish conflict and its terrible impact on veterans made for an unforgettable experience, paving the way for many other films in the genre like Apocalypse Now, Platoon, and Full Metal Jacket.

The story before the war

While most war films spend much of their runtime on the battlefield, The Deer Hunter spends a third of its three-hour runtime depicting its protagonists in their beautiful mountain town before they leave for combat. This is best exemplified by Steven and Angela’s joyous wedding, which presents the happy, promising lives of its leads as long-time friends and their plans to start their own loving families.

This is a stark contrast to their lives and the lives of their loved ones after such a hellish war has left them physically disabled and traumatized. Thus, The Deer Hunter shows exactly how their lives were irreparably damaged by combat, making their loss all the more heartbreaking.

The Deer Hunter - wedding party

On top of all that, the film also explores the Slavic-American community from which the protagonists hail, with Steven and Angela getting married in a Russian Orthodox Church. The way the movie immerses its audience into the culture of such a tight-knit community makes their characters and stories more distinctive and realistic. The town itself becomes a character who becomes fractured by the war along with the protagonists, embodying how the war changed America as a whole.

The Recruit (2022-)
The Recruit | Official Trailer | Netflix
Noah Centineo has made his entire career working for Netflix, and The Recruit allows him to flex his unique charm. The series follows a CIA lawyer who gets drawn into the action after one of the agency's assets threatens to reveal herself unless the CIA helps her clear her name.
While plenty of spy dramas can be rather serious, dour affairs, The Recruit is lighter on its feet than many of those shows and easier to watch. While the show definitely has its moments of real gravitas, The Recruit won't make you feel like you're doing homework.
You can watch The Recruit on Netflix.
The Madness (2024)
The Madness | Official Trailer | Netflix
Colman Domingo should have been a star for decades. But like they say, better late than never. The Madness follows Domingo as Muncie Daniels, a media pundit who is forced to prove his own innocence after he stumbles upon a murder in the Poconos.
Crucially, though, The Madness is also about Daniels's crisis of conscience as he realizes that he no longer believes in anything. The series is riveting from front to back and includes all the plot developments and production values required for a limited series with a hooky premise and real ideas.
You can watch The Madness on Netflix.
Orange Is the New Black (2013-2019)
Orange Is The New Black - Season 1 - Official Trailer [HD]
Calling Orange Is the New Black underrated when it first aired would have seemed silly. The show was one of Netflix's first original series, earning plenty of awards and critical recognition at the time. In the years since, the show and its many groundbreaking elements have been far more forgotten than they should have been.
Telling the story of a public relations executive who is sentenced to serve time in a minimum security prison for her association with a drug dealer, the show was a remarkably bracing, often hysterical series about the realities of life in prison and the prison system more generally. The first few seasons are brilliant, and while it does fall off to some extent, it remained excellent throughout its run.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011)
Jiro Dreams of Sushi now on Netflix! | Netflix
A brilliant, surprisingly simple documentary about an expert craftsperson striving to do their work well, Jiro Dreams of Sushi follows Jiro Ono, a master sushi chef who demands excellence from everyone who works for him. As his son struggles to live up to his father's legacy, Jiro must reckon with his singular devotion to sushi and how it has distorted and warped his life.
At the same time, Jiro Dreams of Sushi gives you plenty of time to appreciate the delicacy and beauty of what Jiro accomplishes, making you think for just a moment that all of his sacrifices might have been worth it.

Once Upon a Time in America (1984)
Once Upon a Time in America Trailer
An epic we don't often get today, Once Upon a Time in America tells the sprawling story of a young man living in New York's Lower East Side who slowly rises the ranks of the criminal underworld to become a crime boss.
A story as much about America as it is about its individual characters, the movie nonetheless features two incredible central performances from Robert de Niro and James Woods. As director Sergio Leone's final film, the movie is every bit the closing statement that any director could have hoped for.
You can watch Once Upon a Time in America on Amazon Prime Video.
Creed (2015)
Creed - Official Trailer [HD]
Making a legacy sequel to Rocky sounded like a terrible idea. Thankfully, it turned out to be exactly the opposite. Creed tells the story of Adonis Creed, the child of Apollo Creed, as he wrestles with his legacy and trains for an exhibition fight under the tutelage of Sylvester Stallon's Rocky Balboa.
Directed by Ryan Coogler, the movie is as triumphant as the first Rocky. It might be even more impressively directed. It doesn't defy the franchise's expectations, but it fulfills them so perfectly and features such an incredible central performance from Michael B. Jordan that it feels almost miraculous.
You can watch Creed on Amazon Prime Video.

Feel Good (2020-2021)
Feel Good | Official Trailer | Netflix
A brilliant, semi-autobiographical love story starring and created by Mae Martin, Feel Good is simultaneously about modern romance and a single, hyper-intense relationship.
The series has a uniquely keen understanding of how sexual fluidity can actually make navigating dynamics more difficult, even as it focuses on the addictive nature of its central relationship. Feel Good is funny, sharp, and hopelessly romantic, featuring two central characters who just can't get enough of each other, even if they're not sure whether that's a good thing.
You can watch Feel Good on Netflix.
She's Gotta Have It (2017-2019)
SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT Official Trailer (2017) Spike Lee, Netflix TV Show
Based on Spike Lee's debut feature of the same name, She's Gotta Have It allowed the director to revisit the same story decades later. The series follows an independent woman living in gentrified Brooklyn who is trying to juggle three separate relationships, even as each of the men she's sleeping with tries to tie her down.
The show evolves and changes in ways the movie never could, but it remains a singular vision of living in New York today. Lee's vision remains singular, and She's Gotta Have It is one of the few mainstream shows to foreground the Black romantic experience today.
You can watch She's Gotta Have It on Netflix.
Sex Education
Sex Education Season 1 Trailer | Rotten Tomatoes TV
A singular, brilliant exploration of teen sex, Sex Education tells the story of the son of a sex therapist who decides to start doling out sex advice of his own to his classmates. As he helps his classmates have open, honest conversations about sex and desire, the show offers a markedly progressive view of what good sex should look like today, even as its central character deals with a romance of his own.
Throughout four brilliant seasons on Netflix, Sex Education managed to be a show about sex that was also about romance and understood the way those two things are always inextricably linked.
