Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
One of the first movies of the 21st century with a badass female protagonist, Kill Bill: Volume 1 stars Uma Thurman as a woman known only as the Bride who wakes up to discover that a group of assassins and their leader have tried to kill her and her unborn child. Desperate for revenge, she uses her martial arts training to take them down, one by one.
A fabulously shot action movie with tons of amazing fight sequences, Quentin Tarantino hit it out of the park with Kill Bill: Volume 1, one of his best movies. Once done, you can also stream Kill Bill: Volume 2, the second part of the story that was released as a follow-up film six months later. It, too, is streaming for free on Tubi.
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)
Before he was John Wick and Neo, Keanu Reeves starred in the hilarious sci-fi comedy Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure as the title character Ted alongside Alex Winter’s Bill. The pair play time-traveling high schoolers who meet historical figures like Sigmund Freud, Joan of Arc, and Abraham Lincoln. It’s great timing because they’re late for a history presentation they forgot to prepare, and this educational trip is giving them everything they need. Eventually, Bill and Ted discover that they rule a utopian society in the future, and they were sent back in time by their future selves to ensure they pass history class to achieve these goals.
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure became an instant classic, spawning terms like “Party on, dudes” and “Way? Yes way!” It also led to several sequel films, including Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey and Bill & Ted Face The Music, the latter of which was released in 2020 and is also streaming for free. Our reviewer called Bill & Ted Face the Music a “most excellent sequel.”
Scary Movie (2000)
As far as horror parody films go, Scary Movie takes the cake. The film, which was followed up by Scary Movie 2 and Scary Movie 3 (also available on Tubi this month) as well as the fourth and fifth movies, is a parody of corny slasher films, most notably the Scream franchise and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Like in I Know What You Did Last Summer, the story begins when a group of teenagers accidentally hit a man with their car and dump his body in a lake. A year later, they are being hunted by a person in a Ghostface mask and robe (like in Scream).
Scary Movie wonderfully weaves in bits and pieces from other horror movies and TV shows, like Halloween, The Blair Witch Project, and even Buffy the Vampire Slayer. You’ll have as much fun picking out the parodies as enjoying the story. Directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans and written by Marlon and Shawn Wayans, the film stars the latter two with other comedic talents like Anna Faris, Carmen Electra, Regina Hall, and Cheri Oteri. Keep the fun going with the knowledge that the Wayans brothers are reportedly working on Scary Movie 6.
A Few Good Men (1992)
Based on the 1989 Aaron Sorkin play, A Few Good Men is set in the military, where two U.S. Marines are charged with the murder of a fellow marine. It’s up to Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise), a U.S. Navy JAG Corps lieutenant, to handle their defense. He has a good track record in pleading out, but not so much in any court experience. This case is different, however, because something is fishy. Through a series of events and revelations, Kaffee decides to take it to court.
One of the best courtroom movies of all time, A Few Good Men brought forth the iconic line “You can’t handle the truth!” A Few Good Men has an incredible cast that also includes Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Pollak, and Noah Wyle.
Scarface (1983)
“Say hello to my little friend!” Chances are, you have said that at least once in jest, or maybe other lines like “I always tell the truth, even when I lie,” or “You gotta make money first.” All these lines come from the iconic Tony Montana from Scarface, a fictional character who has developed such a following that you believe he’s real. In Scarface, Al Pacino plays a Cuban refugee who arrives in Miami and rises through the ranks to become a powerful drug lord.
Today, more than 40 years later, the role remains one of Pacino’s most iconic, and the movie has carved its place in history as one of the best action movie remakes.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
This psychological horror thriller movie remains the best ever to be made about the fictional character Hannibal Lecter from the Thomas Harris novel. Jodie Foster is Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs, a young FBI trainee trying to locate and stop a vicious serial killer known as Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine). Desperate to stop him, she reluctantly seeks the advice of Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a former psychiatrist and convicted serial killer himself. If anyone can help her get into the mind of Buffalo Bill, it’s someone who has not only studied human behavior but is just as sick and twisted.
The interactions between Clarice and Hannibal will make your skin crawl as he manipulates the young woman, toying with her mind using his brilliant knowledge and tactics. As one of the best movies of the 1990s, The Silence of the Lambs paved the way for shows like Hannibal.
The Lego Movie (2014)
“Everything is awesome, everything is cool when you’re part of a team.” That’s the message in The Lego Movie, a sweet animated adventure comedy perfect for the whole family. Emmett Brickowski (Chris Pratt) becomes the unwitting leader of a resistance when he and others in Bricksburg learn that the evil Lord Business (Will Ferrell) has plans to freeze their world using the Kragle. While rallying troops to fight back, Emmett finds his own value and confidence. Plus, he gets the girl.
The Lego Movie was a smash hit, spawning a sequel and opening the door for other Lego-themed films in the franchise based on everyone from Lego Batman to Ninjago figures.
Se7en (1995)
“What’s in the box?” These words are forever tied to Brad Pitt thanks to the movie Seven, stylized as Se7en. The David Fincher crime thriller is about two detectives, the nearly retired William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and his new partner David Mills (Pitt), who are trying to track down a serial killer. The sick and twisted killer selects his victims based on the seven deadly sins.
The question posed in the movie, “What’s in the box?” was finally revealed by Fincher for the movie’s 30th anniversary this year, which also saw the film released in IMAX and 4K UHD Blu-ray. While Se7en was only suspected to perform moderately well at the box office, it became a sleeper hit and ranks as one of the highest-grossing movies in its year of release. Its ending is also considered to be one of the most shocking movie twists ever.
Cloverfield (2008)
This J.J. Abrams found-footage monster horror movie follows six young residents of New York who find themselves on the run from a terrifying monster. Created in a cinéma vérité style, Cloverfield spawned two more in the franchise, Cloverfield Lane in 2016 and The Cloverfield Paradox in 2018. A direct sequel is also reportedly in development, though a release date hasn’t yet been confirmed, making it even more enticing to rewatch this original.
Starring Lizzy Caplan, Jessica Lucas, T.J. Miller, Michael Stahl-David, Mike Vogel, and Odette Yustman, Cloverfield has a neat end credits scene: hint, listen then play it backwards.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
As classic a slasher horror film as you’ll ever find, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is must-see viewing for any fan of the genre. There are no flashy special effects nor gratuitously gruesome scenes. But it is a terrifying movie about a group of friends who become victims of a family of cannibals and a sick killer known as Leatherface.
The first blockbuster slasher film to use power tools as a central weapon, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is considered one of the most influential horror films ever made. What makes it even more impressive is that the movie was made on a relatively small budget with a core cast of mostly unknown actors.
