1. The Flash

The Flash – Official Trailer

With all of the controversy surrounding Ezra Miller (Justice League), it’s refreshing to see some good news from The Flash in the form of an exciting new trailer. The long-awaited film about Barry Allen will finally see the light of day this summer. In the film, Allen travels back in time to prevent his mother’s murder. However, this alters Barry’s future, trapping him in a reality without superheroes as General Zod (George & Tammy’s Michael Shannon) threatens to annihilate the planet.

The Super Bowl trailer for The Flash features the return of Michael Keaton (Birdman) as Batman. Barry recruits Batman to rescue Supergirl (The Young and the Restless’s Sasha Calle), and then team up to fight Zod and save the world. The trailer also features two Flashes as Barry encounters another version of himself. James Gunn called The Flash one of the “greatest superhero movies ever made,” so we’ll see if that proves true this June.

5 years ago, the best crime movie of the 2010s changed the game forever
Four women are behind bars in Hustlers.

The crime genre has long been dominated by men doing bad things. Think of the all-time best crime movies -- Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, The French Connection -- and you'll notice how homogenous they are. Although they are not necessarily formulaic, they do follow a pattern, and it's one where bad men live dangerously, reach enviable highs, and eventually suffer huge downfalls. Sometimes, we root for them to win, as misguided as their actions might be, like in Dog Day Afternoon. Other times, we are fascinated by their journeys without ever empathizing with them, like in The Godfather. Whatever approach we take, a crime movie are often riveting and engaging. The best of them, however, are thought-provoking and intelligent, too, and no crime movie in the past decade has been more so than Lorene Scafaria's 2019 crime dramedy Hustlers.

Based on Jessica Pressler's 2018 article The Hustlers at Scores, the film centers around a group of New York City strippers who begin drugging their high-profile clients, including CEOs and stock traders, and maxing their credit cards. Starring an ensemble led by Constance Wu and a career-best Jennifer Lopez, Hustlers was a breath of fresh air when it premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival to rave reviews. Commercial success ensued, with the film grossing a whopping $157 million against a production budget of $20 million, making it one of 2019's biggest non-MCU success stories. At the time, Hustlers was declared one of the best movies of the year and a breakthrough in the careers of Scafaria, Lopez, and Wu. Now, five years later, it's very easy to see it as not only a towering dramatic achievement, but also the best crime movie of the 2010s that redefined the way we see such stories on the big screen.

This unforgettable film might just be the best sci-fi movie ever made. Here’s why
Two men look fearful in Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

The most iconic image of Donald Sutherland’s career is a spoiler. To describe it would risk giving away more than the uninitiated might want to know about Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Philip Kaufman’s 1978 adaptation of the Jack Finney novel about extraterrestrial imposters out to replace humanity with emotionless doubles. But you know the image. You’ve almost certainly seen it used as a meme sometime over the last couple of decades -- or maybe the last couple of weeks, in response to the actor’s death in June. For those who have watched the movie, there’s always been some cognitive dissonance to seeing that shot transformed into internet joke currency. It is, after all, one of the most blood-curdling images in all of cinema: the look of hope shriveling away, of the future disappearing into a screaming black hole.

It’s a tad ironic that Sutherland might be best remembered for such a grotesquely outsized expression, such a monstrous moment. He was one of Hollywood’s most subtle performers, a New Hollywood legend who often underplayed what was going on inside his characters’ hearts and heads. But his work in Invasion of the Body Snatchers is richer than its final note. As Matthew Bennell, a San Francisco health inspector who slowly becomes aware of a hostile alien takeover in progress, Sutherland offers a vast range of feelings. Arrogance, good humor, fear, deep romantic longing, bottomless despair: Long before he’s literally running from the pod people, Sutherland runs the emotional gamut across this peerless sci-fi nightmare of a thriller.
