‘Game of Thrones’ season 6 finale photos hint at comeuppance

The Game of Thrones season 6 finale is coming, and it brings more of the tricky and often dangerous “great game.” The episode also caps off 10 weeks that have gone by all too quickly. With the finale airing Sunday, HBO has just released six new photos that preview upcoming developments. Watch out if you’re not yet up to date: There are spoilers ahead.

Last week’s much-anticipated battle brought justice to the masochistic Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon), but still more characters may have to answer for their actions in episode 10. Others will have to make important decisions and embark on new paths that will steer us into season 7. For every conflict that is resolved, we expect multiple new ones to arise, leaving us in a torturous limbo until season 7 arrives next year.

HBO’s synopsis for episode 10, The Winds of Winter, is as vague as usual, in spite of the fact that the finale will be the series’ longest episode to date. The blurb does, however, indicate that Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) will be in the spotlight: “Season Finale. Cersei faces her trial.”

While the scheming former queen doesn’t appear in any of the new Game of Thrones photos, Loras Tyrell (Finn Jones), who will also be on trial, does. He is shown kneeling at the feet of the High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce). We’ll see what kind of mercy — if any — he and Cersei get.

Meanwhile, Cersei’s principal incest partner, twin Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), will be busy at the castle of Walder Frey (David Bradley). He is pictured on the journey there with Bronn (Jerome Flynn) as well as enjoying the hospitality of his host. Another photo shows the twins’ brother Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) offering counsel to Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), one of their family’s many enemies.

The photos also indicate that we’ll see how Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) fares and how Davos (Liam Cunningham) will react to new insight into Shireen’s death.

The Game of Thrones season 6 finale airs Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT. If only the fun didn’t have to end.
