Dunkirk movie review
Warner Bros.

World War II was one of the most dramatic events in history, and it’s been memorialized in countless works of fiction, including the just-released film Blitz. These various works tackle every aspect of the war, from what life was like at home to what was happening on every front in the war.

The U.K. was on the fron line of the war for basically its entire duration, so while there have been plenty of American takes on World War II, the war meant something different for those living closer to the conflict. We’ve pulled together five movies and TV shows that the British made about the war for your viewing pleasure.

World on Fire (2019)

World on Fire Trailer - Sean Bean | Lesley Manville | Jonah Hauer-King - BBC Trailers

Most World War II stories focus on the war itself, but World on Fire focuses on the many people who had to live their lives amid the turmoil of Europe’s upheaval. World on Fire focuses on an American war correspondent who faces censorship in Germany, and a man living on a farm who tries to smuggle his Polish lover to Manchester.

World on Fire is a reminder that when the entire world goes to war, there’s no such thing as going on with your life as if nothing happened.

You can watch World on Fire on Amazon Prime Video.

Life After Life (2022)

LIFE AFTER LIFE Trailer (2022) Thomasin McKenzie

Adapted from one of the most acclaimed novels of the 21st century, Life After Life tells the story of Ursula, a woman who slowly discovers that she’s living her life over and over again.

Born in 1910, she lives through the events of World War II, and slowly becomes convinced that her repeated lives should give her the chance to change the course of history. It’s a delicate examination of life’s meaning at a particularly pivotal time in the history of the nation that she is perpetually born into.

You can watch Life After Life on Amazon Prime Video.

Dunkirk (2017)

Dunkirk - Trailer 1 [HD]

A brilliant war movie that dramatizes the British evacuation from Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan‘s war epic is the rare war movie about a losing battle. Thanks to Nolan’s singular ability to manipulate time, the movie is remarkably tense, simultaneously following soldiers on the ground, a pilot flying over the battle, and the civilian boaters who crossed the channel to save their soldiers.

Dunkirk was about fleeing for safety, but it’s also a movie about the triumph of regular people working to save one another from one of the most horrific wars in the history of the world. In Nolan’s hands, it feels like an utter triumph.

You can watch Dunkirk on Amazon Prime Video.

The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)

THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI [1957] – Original Trailer (HD) | Now on 4K Ultra HD

A great epic that focuses on a single slice of World War II, The Bridge on the River Kwai tells the story of a group of British POWs who are instructed by their Japanese captors to build a strategically important bridge.

While the soldiers initially delay the work, they eventually agree to give it their all, and their commanding officer slowly becomes more and more attached to the project. A masterful film about honor, duty, and striving to be excellent, The Bridge on the River Kwai is an absolute classic.

You can rent The Bridge on the River Kwai on Amazon Prime Video.

Atonement (2007)

Atonement (2007) Official Trailer | Screen Bites

A bleak reminder of how hard it was to find happiness during World War II, Atonement concerns itself first and foremost with events that take place before the war, but features unforgettable battle scenes later on that still astound to this day.

When a young girl falsely accuses her older sister’s boyfriend of rape, she sets both he and her sister on an inexorable course that intersects with the tragedies of the war. Atonement is a wistful, lyrical movie about what it means to find peace, and whether the brutal realities of our world will ever allow us to find it. It also made a star out of Saoirse Ronan, who is the lead actress in Blitz.

You can rent Atonement on Amazon Prime Video.

Kristin Stewart in the 2020 film Underwater

Hulu's movie selection for February combines prestige plays with blockbuster success. The Oscar-nominated A Real Pain is heavily featured on the streamer. Jesse Eisenberg's road-trip dramedy received two Academy Award nominations, including Best Supporting Actor for Kieran Culkin. Elsewhere, the biggest blockbuster on Hulu's homepage is Alien: Romulus, the latest terrifying chapter in the Alien franchise.
A Real Pain and Alien: Romulus will certainly be seen by many subscribers. However, there are numerous movies to watch that can be found on the genre pages. If you scroll carefully, you'll find a few diamonds in the rough. To save you time, here are three underrated movies to watch right now. Our picks include a quick thriller, an alien-in-the-ocean horror, and a raunchy comedy.

Underwater (2020)
Underwater | Official Trailer [HD] | 20th Century FOX
Underwater channels Ridley Scott's Alien, posing the question: What if the creature were beneath the surface? Directed by William Eubank, Underwater follows a group of employees at a research and drilling facility at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Part of the facility is destroyed during an underwater earthquake.
With no escape pods left, the group — including Norah Price (Kristen Stewart), Captain Lucien (Vincent Cassel), and Paul Abel (T.J. Miller) — decides that their only chance of survival is to walk to another research base one mile across the ocean floor. Big mistake because unknown creatures terrorize the crew upon their every movement. Like Alien, the team must get creative to survive or risk a painful death.
Watch Underwater on Hulu.
Phone Booth (2002)

Colin Farrell is in the midst of a career-defining run thanks to his Oscar-nominated role in The Banshees of Inisherin and his Golden Globe-winning turn as Oz Cobb in The Penguin. Farrell's always done good work throughout his three-decade run. Phone Booth is a case in point for Farrell's early work. Farrell stars as Stu Shepard, a sleazy New York City publicist who has been unfaithful to his wife Kelly (Radha Mitchell).
While in Times Square, Stu enters a phone booth to call his mistress. A mysterious man (Kiefer Sutherland) calls the booth and forces Stu to remain inside the phone booth. Stu doesn't take this threat seriously. However, this is no laughing matter. The man holds Stu at gunpoint and tells him to obey the rules or face the consequences. Phone Booth is a brisk 81-minute nail-biter with a good cat-and-mouse dynamic between Farrell and Sutherland.

Dirty Grandpa (2016)
Dirty Grandpa (2016 Movie - Zac Efron, Robert De Niro) Official Trailer – “Get Dirty”
It's OK to laugh at stupid humor. There is a lot of lewdness, raunchiness, and stupidity in Dirty Grandpa. Not everything has to be Citizen Kane. Sometimes, watching Zac Efron and Robert De Niro embark on a hijinks-fueled road trip will suffice. Jason Kelly (Efron) is a high-strung Alabama lawyer who will soon marry his boss's Type A daughter (Julianne Hough) in one week.
Before Jason walks down the aisle, he must drive his grandfather, Richard "Dick" Kelly (De Niro), to Boca Raton, Florida. While on the road trip, Dick tricks Jason into driving them to spring break in Daytona Beach, Florida. While Dick wants to party with booze and women, Jason cannot stop thinking about his future and refuses to relax. That's where Grandpa comes in, who shows his grandson how to let loose and have a good time.

21 Jump Street (2012)

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum should not work as a comedic tandem on paper. However, the two actors form a hilarious tag team in 21 Jump Street, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's action comedy based on the 1987 TV show of the same name. In the early 2000s, high school students Morton Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Greg Janko (Tatum) are complete opposites. Schmidt is a nerdy outcast, while Jenko is a popular jock.
Seven years later, the duo become unlikely friends while studying to become police officers. Their first assignment is to go undercover as high school students to infiltrate a drug ring and find the suppliers. This time, Schmidt fits in with the cool kids, while Janko bonds with the geeks.
