3 great free movies to stream this weekend (October 11-13)

A green-faced man bites a rose and stares.
New Line Cinema

Heading into 2024, Joker: Folie à Deux seemed like a sure thing. Joker made over $1 billion, and Joaquin Phoenix won an Oscar for his performance as Arthur Fleck. Greenlighting a sequel was a no-brainer. But bad reviews started to come in after its Venice premiere. Then, audiences finally saw the film and completely rejected it. Joker: Folie à Deux drastically underperformed in its opening weekend with a domestic haul of $37.7 million. Joker 2’s uphill battle to profitability is now steeper than Arthur’s favorite staircase.

If you’re staying home and have no interest in watching a DC sequel this weekend, you can find thousands of free movies on FAST services. These services rely on ads to make money, so signing up will cost you nothing. Consider watching one of these three recommendations: a slasher with a killer clown, a comedy with a green troublemaker, and a sensational thriller from the 1980s.

Terrifier (2016)

An evil clown smiles sadistically.
Epic Pictures Group

Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton) returns to invade your nightmares again this weekend in Terrifier 3. Before it became a cult favorite and box office success story, the Terrifier franchise started with a low-budget, crowdfunded independent film. Terrifier almost plays like a proof of concept, with the movie focusing on scares over character development.

On Halloween night, Art the Clown finds new targets to stalk, prey, and slay. His potential victims include Tara (Jenna Kanell), her sister, Vicky (Samantha Scaffidi), and her friend, Dawn (Catherine Corcoran). Throughout the night, Art goes on the prowl, killing anyone who comes in his path in the most brutal ways. Terrifier is a throwback to the slashers of the 1980s, backed by an iconic villain and gruesome kills.

The Mask (1994)

The Mask | Theatrical Trailer | World of Warner Bros.

In 1994,  Jim Carrey became a bona fide movie star with roles in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Dumb and Dumber, and The Mask. Is that the best one-year run by an actor of the last 30 years? Frankly, it might be! One of those movies, The Mask, is available to stream on Tubi.

For lack of a better word, Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey) is a pushover. That all changes for Stanley when he finds a mysterious mask that turns him into a green-faced playboy with wits, charm, and attitude. As the Mask, Stanley gets the attention he desperately wants, including some from the lovely Tina Carlyle (Cameron Diaz). However, the Mask’s troublemaking conflicts with gangster Dorian Tyrell (Peter Greene), who wants to end the Mask’s hijinks.

Blow Out (1981)

John Travolta holds a microphone in the air.
Filmways Pictures

Heading into the 1980s, John Travolta had a legitimate claim as being the biggest movie star on the planet. Saturday Night Fever and Grease took Travolta to another stratosphere, and his success continued with 1980’s Urban Cowboy. Travolta fans knows the rest of the decade was unkind to his career, but before it went badly, the Oscar nominee starred in Brian De Palma’s excellent neo-noir Blow Out.

Jack Terri (Travolta) is recording sounds for a movie when he witnesses a horrific car crash. The male driver dies, but Jack manages to save the female passenger, Sally (Nancy Allen). After reviewing his tapes, Jack learns Sally was an escort accompanying a presidential hopeful. The car did not crash on its own; it was an assassination attempt. Despite facing outside threats, Jack conducts his own investigation, entangling himself in a government conspiracy that could get him killed.

3 great Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend (February 7-9)
Denzel Washington in He Got Game.

When picking selections for the weekend ahead, we don't tend to do so by year. But by a fluke of the February release schedule, all of our selections for the three great Hulu movies that you need to stream this weekend were released in theaters in 1998. And they couldn't be more different from each other.
Our first selection is a powerful father-and-son drama from director Spike Lee, while the second features one of Oprah Winfrey's performances. The final selection is a classic comedy that caused quite a stir when it was originally released, but it may seem relatively tame nearly three decades later.

He Got Game (1998)

Spike Lee's He Got Game is a basketball fable that allowed NBA player Ray Allen to give the performance of a lifetime as Jesus Shuttlesworth, one of the top high school basketball prospects in the country. Colleges are so eager to sign Jesus that the governor of New York briefly releases his estranged father, Jake Shuttlesworth (Denzel Washington), from prison just to convince Jesus to attend the governor's alma mater.

A group of football players stand with their coach.

This weekend welcomes one of the year's biggest sporting events, the Super Bowl. The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will play in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, Louisiana. The game is a rematch of Super Bowl LVII, which saw the Chiefs defeat the Eagles by a score of 38-35. This time, the Eagles will try to avenge their loss and prevent the Chiefs from winning three consecutive Super Bowls.
The Super Bowl is typically the most-watched TV event of the calendar year. Even if you don't like football, many consumers tune in for the entertaining commercials. To get ready for the game, FAST services have a wide selection of football movies to stream for free. Our recommendations include a comedy about a team of replacements, a 1990s comedy, and an underdog story.

The Replacements (2000)

Everyone likes a good redemption story. For the players in The Replacements, this is their shot at becoming football heroes. Due to a players' strike, the Washington Sentinels are left without a team. The Sentinels must win three of their final four games to make the postseason. Sentinels owner Edward O'Neil (Jack Warden) hires former coach Jimmy McGinty (Gene Hackman) to lead a team of replacement players for the rest of the season.
McGinty accepts the deal and forms the team his way. The centerpiece of the new squad is quarterback Shane Falco (Keanu Reeves), a former All-American whose career went downhill after choking in a big game. With Falco as the leader, McGinty fills in the rest of the squad with rejects and no-names. However, the team eventually comes together and bonds over their shared disappointments. Who knows? Maybe a team of bench guys can become legends.
