Disney and Lucasfilm audition thousands in search for next Han Solo

Disney and Lucasfilm need a young Han Solo for a future Star Wars spinoff, so they are auditioning the actors — all of them.

According to THR, no less than 2,500 thespians have sent tapes to casting director Jeanne McCarthy and it seems the studio is casting a very wide net as it looks for the right man for the job.

“This has been the easiest movie to audition for,” an unnamed agent told THR. “They are seeing everyone.”

Dave Franco (21 Jump Street), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), and Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars), have all thrown their hats into a ring that includes at least 2,497 others, but Disney and Lucasfilm have yet to make a decision on who the next scruffy-looking nerf herder will be.

While Harrison Ford was a relative unknown when he played Han Solo in Star Wars Episode IV — A New Hope, the character has now taken on almost mythic status. We know Ford as Solo and vice versa, so you can see why Disney and Lucasfilm are being meticulous about this process. Cast the wrong person in this role and it could impact the audience’s suspension of disbelief in a major way.

The film is currently operating under the humorous code name Red Cup (a red Solo cup reference), but has yet to name an official title. The casting team is reportedly seeking someone who is funny, charming, convincing as an action hero, and looks somewhat like a young Ford.

If you’ve always dreamed of playing the irreverent, sarcastic, shoot-from-the-hip space cowboy, it sounds like this may be your best chance.

The as-of-yet untitled Star Wars project is set to start shooting in January of 2017 and will target a May 25, 2018, release date. We’ll bring you more details as they become available.

Star Wars: Solo’s Emilia Clarke could lead a Disney+ spinoff

Lucasfilm's theatrical Star Wars ventures admittedly reached a level of burnout by the time the sequel trilogy concluded, at least in terms of quality. The release strategy seemed solid, with mainline saga films released every other year with one-off anthologies in between. While the latter worked out for Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, things didn't go as well for Solo: A Star Wars Story. Changing directors partway through filming and being rushed to meet a deadline just five months after the release of Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi were just two of the many reasons why the film eventually became a box office bomb.

However, despite the poor commercial performance, Solo did manage to garner a moderately positive critical reception and see a boost when it was finally added to Disney+. The movie's engaging ensemble cast made for a solid sci-fi heist adventure. Emilia Clarke's Qi'ra was among them, and she showed great potential for being expanded upon outside of movies. The twist revealing Qi'ra to be working under Darth Maul's leadership in the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate could open up an exciting world for Star Wars to explore, especially in a serialized adventure on Disney+.

What Star Wars fans want to see from Obi-Wan Kenobi series

Outside of a sequel trilogy, a solo Obi-Wan Kenobi movie or TV series has arguably been the most in-demand Star Wars project among fans. Especially given the timing, the very concept seems like a slam dunk for Lucasfilm, as Ewan McGregor's turn as the titular Jedi Master was perhaps the best thing to come out of the prequel trilogy and the actor is at the perfect age to take on such an endeavor. The vague premise and concept practically write themselves and, after years of speculation and outright lies from the star himself, Obi-Wan Kenobi is finally a go at Disney+ in a limited series format -- and it premieres in just about two months from now.

Series director Deborah Chow and writer Joby Harold have quite the task on their hands, but the long-awaited trailer for the show is dripping with promise. Chow, in particular, has already tested her mettle on the acclaimed The Mandalorian, so veteran Star Wars fans should be hopeful of the final product. Though the concept of Obi-Wan Kenobi is clear as day on paper, there are certain boxes to tick and hurdles to jump to help ensure the series measures up to the Jedi's storied legacy in the Star Wars universe and in pop culture. Already receiving rave reviews, Deli Boys is a hilarious comedy about two Pakistani American brothers, Mir (Asif Ali) and Raj (Saagar Shaikh), who discover that their father was much more than a convenience store owner. When he suddenly passes, the brothers discover that dear Dad was actually embroiled in a life of crime.
If they don’t want to lose everything their family has worked for, they need to take over as the new crime bosses. But this is not a life they know anything about. As one of the most anticipated Hulu shows of 2025, Deli Boys’ first season delights thanks to its clever one-liners, talented cast, and bizarre storylines.

The Residence (March 20)

The best way to describe The Residence is that it's like Knives Out in the White House with a gender-swapped Benoit Blanc-like character. The lead is Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba), an equally eccentric yet brilliant detective who consults with the local police. When the White House chief usher, A.B. Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito in a role that was originally supposed to be played by the late Andre Braugher), winds up dead, she’s called in to investigate. A state dinner is going on downstairs with officials from Australia, and Cupp orders that no one leave until she questions all 140+ people present.
The Residence is plenty of fun, mixing the usual whodunit formula with Shonda Rhimes' unique creative flair that will keep you guessing from one episode, even a moment, to the next. Aduba is perfect as Cupp, who combines an oddball personality — including repeatedly birdwatching in the middle of a murder case — with a subtle sarcasm. Through it all, however, she throws down astute observations that teach everyone she knows exactly what she’s doing, even if it doesn’t look like it. If you love the whodunit genre, The Residence won’t disappoint.

The Studio (March 26)

One of Apple TV+’s quieter new show releases is The Studio, which has gotten overwhelmingly positive reception in early reviews. Seth Rogen created and stars in this comedy as Matt Remick, a man who longs to run a Hollywood studio. When he finally realizes this dream, however, the reality of the complicated balancing act of managing budgets, changing economic and societal times, corporate demands, and eccentric actors sinks in.
The Studio has an incredible cast that includes Catherine O’Hara, Ike Barinholtz, Chase Sui Wonders, and Kathryn Hahn. There's also a rotating selection of guest stars playing exaggerated versions of themselves to add to the Hollywood feel, from Zac Efron to Martin Scorsese. Early reviews already give The Studio a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, with Slant Magazine’s Ross McIndoe singling out the dark and “more than a little pointed” comedy as the highlight.
